Using try again...
Gives opportunity for 2nd attempt
Provides time for processing
Creates common language for communicated harm
Overview
Try again is a statement that an adult or peer can use to allow someone who is dysregulated to retract or reframe their response.
Try again is said in a calm neutral tone.
The adult or peer allows the student to continue the conversation.
A conference may occur later to discuss the initial response at a later time.
If a student is not able to reframe or responds with an equal or harsher tone then the use of planned ignoring or controlled choices may be necessary.
Core Components
Try again is introduced as a way of allowing someone to rethink what they said or did
Must let the original comment go (rational detachment)
Follow up processing through conferencing completed
Proactive Implementation
Proactively implementing "try again" may look like practicing and teaching the class how to appropriately respond to a second attempt at meeting an expectation.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing the "try again" strategy may result from students requiring opportunities to authentically reattempt a situation.
Connection
If the need is connection then students may practice the strategy with each other or with younger students.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the strategy should be used to allow for shifting behavior in the moment prior to escalation.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then students may use the prompt to identify what unexpected behavior they are demonstrating and readjust.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student may be prompted to try again and use a regulation strategy prior to readdressing.
