Using act it out...
Supports perspective taking
Allows role representation
Improves understanding of situations
Overview
When a conflict or problem is presented within the classroom, the students involved or the teacher will create a scenario that represents the situation.
Members involved work within the community of the classroom to "act out" the scenario with each person taking their role or the other's role.
The class holds a discussion on possible solutions or ways to resolve the problem.
Core Components
Clearly defined guidelines of scenarios
Practiced as a place
Used in areas outside of conflict resolution
Proactive Implementation
Proactively implementing Act it Out involves normalizing scenarios where students must act out plays, scenes, readings, events, etc. Normalizing acting and scenarios supports implementation of non-academic acting.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing Act it Out may stem from students needing to practice events that may or have happened. Students may need practice walking through the scenario to take perspective and think through responses.
Connection
If the need is connection then students may select preferred individuals to be the other actors in the scene.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the scene should consist of practice that specific skill.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then students should see, hear, and ask for the perspective of the others involved.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then students may work through conflict in a scene with the support of a supervising adult as a coping/regualtion strategy.
