Overview
When there is a conflict in the room and conflict resolution is needed, the teacher way play a song that shifts the mindset of the student away from a current emotional state.
This could look like bringing two peers together for mediation or a restorative conversation and playing a song such as the ones listed below.
Breakfast at Tiffany's- Providing support to two people that may not have anything in common. Find the common thing they can connect on to start.
You Can't Always Get What You Want- The Rolling Stones- When a student or group is denied immediate access to a preferred material.
You're Welcome (Moana Soundtrack)- When someone may need to be appreciated or feels under appreciated.
Music and rhythm help support regulation and connection.
This should not be done unless their is a strong trusting relationship with the student and a sense of a safe community.
The song jumpstarts the conversation on how to repair the harm that was done and perspective take.
Core Components
Must be pre-established. If first time used is in response it will be negatively received
Must work for your environment
Seek feedback from students and implement accordingly
Proactive Implementation
Practice the musical reset with students at the beginning of the year or semester. The goal is to introduce when the students are calm and regulated.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively introducing the musical reset may look like sharing with the class the "why" of the reset. This typically is due to disregulation among the students. The reset is a tool for breaking toxic mindsets.
Connection
If the need is connection then the musical reset can be used as a whole class response. Class members can create and share their own based on their favorite music. (Reset of the Week).
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the student may practice the musical reset during a specific time a skill is being practice. The reset may include a checklist to reflect on to support the skill once completed.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the musical reset can be designed with a choral response to condition students to be aware of a specific event/behavior.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the musical reset may be combined with a prompt to take a break or the musical reset itself can be used during a challenging time as regulation.
