Overview
Students use a graphic organizer to elicit empathy toward a selected person with a set progression of questions.
1- Who are we empathizing with
2- What do they need to do
3- What do they see
4- What do they say
5- What do they do
6- What do they hear
7- What do they think and feel
The goal is to encompass the complexity of another person's actions
Students then reflect after completion and determine best course of action.
Core Components
Questions are asked in using a template to elicit perspective taking of another
Questions must be asked in the specific order
Students are coached but not given answers
Students must reflect on the completion of the graphic organizer and supported in determine best course of action.
Proactive Implementation
Proactively implementing an empathy map requires empathy to be explicitly taught and understood by the entire class.
Responsive Implementation
Connection
If the need is connection then the student should practice the empathy map with others and discuss perspectives.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the students should use the empathy map as a way of improving conflict resolution.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then students should work through the processing sheet of the empathy map to determine the impact of an action on the other person.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student should use the empathy map as a processing sheet. They may conduct their own empathy map on themselves.
