Work with students to design a personalized symbol of connection.
The hug, high-five, and handshake. Fist-bump, and shoulder tap is unique to each student and the teacher.
The symbol is used whenever there is an appropriate time deemed by the teacher including the hallway, during transition, etc.

Responsively implementing high fives and handshakes may look like asking students what their preferred method would be and taking the time to craft individual gestures to foster stronger relationships.
Connection
If the need is connection then individualizing the gesture is key and can be combined with welcoming students at the door.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the student may receive a gesture when they demonstrate a specific skill.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the students may complete a journal immediately following
