Using good calls home...
Connects community
Establishes positive relationships
Promotes positive expectations
Overview
Introduce a reward system where a core team provides "good calls home" as an incentive.
This blends with a schoolwide behavior system such as the PBIS framework.
Teachers reward students with a card for meeting schoolwide expectations.
They bring the card identifying what they did and the core team calls the family of the student on the spot.
Core Components
Calls are sustainable and followed through
A 4:1 ration of positive calls to concerns is maintained
Students are given the cards with rational and explanation of why they are receiving the call
Proactive Implementation
Proactively implementing Good Calls Home start by establishing a baseline of communication at the start of the year. Reaching out and establishing a connection early and scheduling periods of time to make additional calls is necessary.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing Good Calls Home may stem from a need for increased bridged support between family and school.
Connection
If the need is connection then students may participate in the phone call as a celebration.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the call may be targeted with a specific skill that was demonstrated.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the student may be asked why the phone call should be made or give evidence when the why is communicated.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student may cash in or use the good phone call intermittently to support mindset shifting. This can also be scheduled to precede a known challenging event.
