Overview
Provide a prompt at the beginning of each class period to connect students to their learning.
The prompt should be a way of connecting and building relationships with students.
These prompts should elicit responses that give a glimpse into their lives outside of your classroom.
Engage in some reflection that builds a bridge among their personal lives, the day’s state of affairs, and the learning targets for the class period.

Proactive Implementation
Using prompts must work for the supervising adult. There are many different representations that can be used. Learning about your learners and how best to facilitate these prompts starts by asking. Crafting or discussing preferences is a proactive approach.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively using prompts may stem from a need increase or practice a specific skill. Supervising adults may work with students, groups, or classes to determine the best may to cue them with a prompt.
Connection
If the need is connection then the prompt may be handwritten by someone they have strong relationship with.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the prompt language is specific to that skill.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then a discrete prompt such as a secret signal may suffice to cue the student.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the prompt may be situational to allow students to take a break that will support a regulation strategy.
