Using a sticky note check in...
Fosters community
Gives real time feedback
Creates a structure for communicating needs
Overview
Students write how they are feeling that morning on the back of a sticky note (i.e. the side with the sticky on it), and stick it on the white board, so the face of the sticky note is blank and their feelings are kept anonymous on the back.
The teacher will follow up with students and check in with them.
Daily check ins may occur with a given prompt where the sticky notes are faced up and discussed from the prompt during a structure such as a morning meeting.
Core Components
Consistently used
Actively checked/monitored
Followed up with students
Proactive Implementation
Proactively establishing the sticky note check in requires the supervising adult to start the system from the beginning of the year. Students should practice completing check in s that are low risk.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing the sticky note check in would be easiest by having a preestablished system in place so that the ability to change the prompt can be seamless. If the system is not in place then low risk prompts must be used first to build trust.
Connection
If the need is connection then the students may have the option of reading the sticky notes on a public board throughout the day.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the sticky note can be a specific example of a time or place they used a skill.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the sticky note check in can be an emotion such as how do you feel when you are angry.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the sticky note check in may be combined with a de-escalation strategy before or after its used.
