Using a weighted lap pad...
Provides a calming effect
Promotes regulation
Supports de-escalation
Overview
The teacher obtains a weighted lap pad which may include a weighted blanket, pillow, or stuffed animal that can rest child’s lap and aid with regulation and soothing.
The weighted lap pad provided to students as a response to student identifying it as a need for regulation or as a proactive strategy for for determined parts of the day such as independent work.
Students who need a boost with attention or calming might benefit from a weighted lap pad.
Core Components
Communicated with student and discussed protocol of use
Provide trial time to reflect on implementation
Proactive Implementation
Proactively introducing the weighted lap pad requires allowing all students to trial the use. This may be down throughout the first few weeks of school where set perimeters are established and students are each given an opportunity to use it. The goal is to normalize the use for all so the few that benefit are more willing to use.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively introducing a weighted lap pad may happen when the supervising adult notices a need to reduce anxiety and restlessness, or increase regulation. The lap pad must be discussed and trialed. The student may self monitor its effectiveness.
Connection
If the need is connection then the lap pad can be a part of the community such as when classrooms have shared resources.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the student may have times when the lap pad is suggested based on specific challenges either location, time of day, or subject.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the student may be prompted to use the lap pad when cues are seen of bubbling behavior.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student may have the option of using the pad when they feel they have become disregulated.
