Using the spins...
Shifts mindset
Promotes de-escalation
Gives physical prompt to connect to regulation
Overview
Students are taught to spin their body counterclockwise to reset or regulate themselves.
Spinning is introduced to the student when they are calm and regulated ina game format.
The goal of spinning is to slowly rotate and distract from a particularly strong emotion that needs to be processed in a relaxed emotional state.
The "spin" should be prompted by the adult to the student when bubbling behavior occurs.
The teacher may prompt with a set number of spins to keep it novel.
This is a responsive strategy.
After the completion of a "spin" the conversation is restated or a calming strategy is suggested such as a breathing exercise.
Core Components
Balanced with serious and fun
Practiced and widely accepted by class
Processing occurs post "spin"
Spin is not forced
Proactive Implementation
Proactively implementing the spins may look like teaching students to reset themselves by rotating counter clockwise. Students may need that practice and processing to make trying again a normal belief.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing the spins may stem from the need for more opportunities for second chances at engaging with others. Students may impulsively make statements or act without opportunities to make things right.
Connection
If the need is connection then another student who has been harmed may ask the student to spin.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then specific skills such as grit, perseverance, or self talk may be targeted.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the student may ask how the other person was impacted in this process.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student may complete the spin and take a break to become regulated or use the spin as a signal to regulate.
