Nexus 7 Settings

Introduction

Here are my Nexus 7 (2013) settings including miscellaneous notes. See also: Android App Settings, Useful Android Apps.

Miscellaneous Notes

Camera problems

The camera seems to make the tablet crash constantly, but I'm not sure. The problems started when I tried to use Google Lens (in Google Photos, view an image and tap the Google Lens button). The problem is that Nexus 7 is an not an "eligible" device for Google Lens. 1/2019.

Inserting microSIM card

The "key" for opening the microSIM card slot is very easy to lose, but you can use a paper clip instead: twist the paper clip half open and use it to open the microSIM card slot.

When inserting the microSIM card, keep the tablet screen up (towards the sky).

Screenshot / Screencapture

"Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time for a few seconds." (source)

Location of screenshots: /sdcard/Pictures/Screenshots

Use Photos app to remove screenshots. The first time you view the image you do not see the trash can icon. You need to press back button to "exit" app and go back to Photos to see it.

Do not make Photos app as the default app to open screenshots. It will not be possible to swipe through the screenshots or remove them.

Send Files via Bluetooth to OS X

You need to have Bluetooth Sharing (not File Sharing) turned on in OS X. It may sound strange when receiving files, but that's the way it is.

ColorNote: open a document, "Send", "Bluetooth", "Choose Bluetooth device". The "Choose Bluetooth device" list might be empty first, so switch to another app and switch back to this app.

Receive Files via Bluetooth from OS X

Files can be found from directory /sdcard/bluetooth.

Upload photos to cloud (instead of removing the microSIM card)

Comment: uploading to Google Drive is better, because you can see from the file names the correct order of the photos. Uploading to Google Plus (Google Photos) messes up the order and the file names are random.

Start File Manager Pro.

Go to /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera.

Press Multi, so you can make a multiple file selection.

Select the photos you want to upload.

Select Share.

Select Drive.

SD Card

SD card directory location

SD card directory location is /sdcard/<app-name> (replace app-name with any directory name the app chooses to use).

SD card directory location for an app is not /storage/emulated/0/<app-name> as an app usually tells you when saving or exporting a file.

I added a new (device) user (not an account) and lost the previous one. Add an account in Google Chrome instead.

I lost all settings and apps. ← I thought I lost everything, but then in Users, I removed the other user.

In Google Chrome, sign out, select another account and restart Google Chrome.

Wi-Fi

Comment: use "Add Network" instead of just connecting to your WLAN, because I use the "Hide SSID" setting. Otherwise Nexus 7 can't connect automatically to my WLAN.
