Artist's Statement:

The idea was to create 4 linoleum block prints, one with a solid color, one with multiple colors, one on a non-traditional surface, and one that was extended in some way by drawing or coloring over it. I chose to use a photo as a reference, and then made it black and white and carved it.  my favorite is the multi-colored one, which I called 'brick walls and tall places'  because the photo that based the block on was taken when I climbed up a wall to get to a window.

I used masking to create the colored one, making a stencil out of one of my previous prints, and blocking the places that I wanted to keep white. I then used my normal lino block to print in black over the color.

I did a lot of research on lino prints and I used that to make my design balanced with equal black and white space.

I went on a walk with my family to popham beach, and at the fort there, my sister and I claimed up into the windows. I was left of this memory, of a summer spent in tall places, climbing trees, and fort walls.
I think that this piece was a bit more of an experiment than the others, because I started out with just a lino cut, and didn't know how I would ad color. I ended up using masking.
In the end, the edges ended up being a little rough, but I think that reflects the nostalgic old picture quality that reminds me of summer. the color that I chose for the background matched the lichen growing on the fort walls.
