Sustained Investigation #2

Artist's Statement:

The idea behind this project was to show how recycling protects the planet. I wanted to show how recycling a material that I use everyday is beneficial to the planet. I had the idea of using the recycling symbol to show the differnt stages of the paper recycling process, and when on the flip side showing all the trees that are saved by doing this process. Recycling paper takes much less C02 and energy than making paper from trees does. In this way I wanted to show that recycling paper is a good thing.

I chose to use bristol paper, and plan to use newspaper as a background for the recycling symbol. I might even do a vairity of different papers I find in the recycling for the background. I wanted to use a material that I use often in a different way, and hope making my own paper for the background with do that. for the recycling symbol, I chose to use colored pencil for the trees to add a pop of color to the piece. I hope this will inspire everything that we need to protect, because it is the only color I have planned for the piece.

My process started with making a recycling symbol and then drawing inside it. I started out with a thicker pen at first. However I found that I lost a lot of detail with the thicker pen, so I traced the symbol and started over with a thinner pen. before all this I had done some planning in a sketch. I had considered doing the arrows in different types paper, but ended up not doing this. At first i thought I would just continue with the same drawings on the flip side of the arrows, but I realized that it needed some contrast, so I decided to put the trees.Â
