Element of Nature

Artist's Statement: For this piece the assignment was to create a peice that interacted with an element, and incorporated nature in some way. I chose to use water, and incorporated nature by pressing natural debris that I found outside into my pitcher. I also incorporated nature by making the lines of my pitcher more curved and natural.
I used slabs to create the pitcher, and decorated those slabs by pressing leaves into them. I then made a pull handle for it, because I think it flows better than a coil or slab handle. I had some trouble when I was constructing the pot with getting it to not crack, but in the end it all turned out. For the glazing, I really went experimental, which was quite fun, since the outcome would be unexpected.
One thing that I do regret is that the texture didn't shine through as much as I had hoped it would. That was a consequence of going with layering of PC glazes (I ended up using 8 total: palladium, flambe, verte lustre, tourmaline, blue rutile, blue midnight, firebrick red, and frosted mellon). Overall, however, I am happy with the result, since it still has the lines that I was looking for, and the texture + glaze combination makes it interesting to look at.Â
