Sustained Investigation #6

Artist's Statement:

The idea for this project was to have an old boot represent the carbon footprint that we leave behind. I wanted to show the different ways that we contribute to carbon emissions. I also wanted to play on the idea that an old boot is something abandoned, and not taken accountable for. In the same way, we don't really take account for our carbon emissions.

For my materials, I was very conscious to choose an old boot that was black, because I knew I wanted to have lighter parts pop out of it. I chose black instead of brown because I wanted more contrast. I also wanted to play with the idea of fast fashion. This boot came from walmart, so it falls into that category. I think that the silver paint also gives a bit of an industrial feel.

My process started with making a sketch of what my idea might look like. I then divided up the boot into the different panels. I decided to make each panel a different aspect of carbon emissions. I started with planes and transportation, since I knew that it was one of the major ones, so I put it on one of the bigger panels. The same goes for energy making, which I also put on a large panel.Â
