Two Dancers

Artist's Statement:

This painting is about the idea of two ballet dancers who are mimicking each other, so you can't really tell weather one dancer is in a mirror, or a person of their own. It would entirely be that they are not even a mirror image, but a shadow. It might even be that the dancers are not in a studio, but underwater. Either way, the subject is two figures, and the relationship they have with each other, bother in their similarities, and in their differences.

When making this piece, I was very careful about lighting, and controlling the light. I wanted to capture that dusty dance studio vibe, and used several different techniques to do so. My colors were also chosen to mimic the light colors that dancer wear, and the dark color of the art form.

Overall, it was made pretty fast, and with a pretty visceral process, something that I think connects well with the subject, as dance in itself is fast and visceral and requires technique.

my revision process was pretty difficult, as it required me to really think about anatomy without compromising the fluidity of the painting. I had to really play with light to get this one right, and in the end I am very happy with the results.Â
