Happy Mug
Artist's Statement:
The assignment was to create a cylinder by using the coil technique, and then create some form of relief onto it by carving it. I chose to create a mug, and have the carving be flowers. I wanted to use a glaze that would really make the carvings pop, so I used the Celadon glazes, which would make the indentations darker than the relief.
I wanted to have the mug be my happy mug, so I chose to use a repeated pattern of sunflowers, because sunflowers make me happy. I also chose my color scheme based off of this, choosing to mix the glazes to form a gradient of yellows, oranges, and purples.
There are some things that I regret with this mug, and one of them is that the handle isn't straight. Another is that I wished that the outside was darker, and more like the inside. Some things that I could have done to do this would have been painting with underglaze and clear glaze instead of a celadon glaze on the outside of the mug.
