Artist's Statement:
I made this painting in my grandmother's studio. Yon Nicolas. Oma. She's a abstract expressionist painter. It took me a while to find him, but eventually I decided on a dreamer. At first I thought he was going to be blue. But then a found this beautiful, luscious, dark blue midnight, and I just had to outline him in it. Then I found this red. orange red. that's his color, I thought. I made some shapes that look a bit like hands, that might be turning his head in the right direction, and cupping his ear. Face the sun, dreamer.
I used acrylic, because I rather like acrylic, and besides its the medium my oma uses most, so it was readily available in many pretty colors. I first used charcoal to outline him, and then I went on directly with the paint. It was rather like I was first covering him up, and then pulling him out of the paint again.
It turned out a little different than I expected, I was expecting him to be melancholy. I think the orange was a good call. He seems happier.
