Sustained Investigation #10

Artist's Statement: 

The idea for this peice was insoired by the ledgends of selkies, women who can transform into seals by wearing their seal skin. I wanted to represent human transformation into something else, and how fluid our bodies can be. I also wanted to use seals since this is a sea animal, and for the most part I have been working with land animals. So far I have done wolves a lot, and I want to branch out. 

I chose to use digital media and procreate because for me, digital media is the medium of transformation. Now adays, anything can be transformed in photoshop. I wanted to tap into this. I also chose procreate because I thought that it flowed very easily, and I liked the fluidity of the pen.

My process started with multiple sketches. You can see that in each one, the water is different. THis shows how the transformation is also in the process, and how we are also fluid in our ideas. I also wanted to use digital because the legend goes that the Selkie woman was trapped on land by a fisherman, who stole her pelt and kept it in a chest. I wanted to show this in the way the we can get trapped in our digital selves, and the selves we show online.
