Artist's Statement:

For this project we started off with a single word that we thought captured the first semester. My initial word was frazzled. This lead me manipulate the paper in a certain way, to create that frizzy look, but after taking a new look at it with fresh eyes,  I saw that there was some religious imagery that I had somehow worked in there, without intention. This lead me to settle on the word filigree, because some of the crumpled paper that I folded looked to me like the intricate details that are seen in churches and in ceremonial robes. In the end it also captured the first semester, because of the attention to detail that I had throughout the first semester, that I hope to maintain in this semester.

For this project, we were expressly restricted to paper for a material choice. However, it was up to us how we wanted to manipulate the paper. I chose to use a glue gun to connect small strips of paper. I chose to do this because I wanted to play with the fragility of paper, and how that might translate to facades that people put up. I also wanted to work with negative space, and create a visual look that interacted with the multiple layers of the work.

My process wasn't very planned out. I started with a sketch, that had some elements that changed with the final product. In my sketch, the hair was different, it was a bit more wild, with split ends and in a less geometric style. I also excluded the hand that I had in my original sketch idea. However, with the final product i did add a collar that was not there in the sketch.
