Final Reflection:
I think that something that I definitely have improved on is thinking in 3D space. I am a very graphic artist, and I work well with positive and negative space in 2D. This class has really pushed me into thinking with that same positive and negative space but in 3D. My earlier works this year really demonstrate one of my artistic weaknesses. They were more focused on the surface, and on embellishment, rather than the whole piece. They tended to lean more towards reliefs, which is a indicator of that weakness. Towards the end of this class, I focus more on how the material plays with air. I definitely still think that surface is important to sculpture, but I have started to think more about the whole of the piece, and the piece form all sides instead of just one particular area. I have realized that I can use my strong sense of 2D positive and negative space to translate that into material and air, and make better sculptures for it.
I think that the most challenging project, and therefore the one that I am most proud of, is the fishbone corset, the first SI that I did. When making the corset I ran into a lot of issues with construction, and had to start over a lot of times. It was my fist time making a pattern, and making something wearable out of paper. I had a really hard time with the bust fit, because everybody has different sizes, and the mannequin was slightly larger than I was. I also had trouble witht he pleats, and getting them to switch directions. However, I managed to persevere. For the precise reason that this project was so challenging, it was also the most satisfying, which makes it my favorite. It is also my favorite end product, because it is something that I can wear in the future and keep improving on.
Next year, I am planning on taking a lot of art classes. I will be a senior, and I have plans to go art school, which is very exciting! For this reason, my main artistic goals with the prepping for art school, and all the art classes that I will be taking next year. This summer I have plans to go to the netherland, where my grandmother has her art studio in amsterdam. There I plan on painting A LOT with her, since she is very developed, and can give me lots of good tips! I also plan on visiting lots of museums, and art schools, to get a sense of both my artistic history, and also my future. I also have big plans for my set of tarot cards that I have slowly been improving, and hope to be able to print out and sell as soon as I am finished with the last details. I hope to be able to complete this over the summer.
