Artist's Statement:

The main idea behind this work was to create something wearable out of magazine paper. I wanted to make something wearable because magazines so often influence us, and are a common source of media. I decided to make a crown, because I knew that media is a big influence in our brain development, especially images. I also wanted to portray the relationship between magazines, and commercialism, and wealth, and also to play with the idea of royalty. In the end, I photographed it upside down, because I also wanted to play with the idea of how all of this can be reversed.

I chose to work with magazines because I thought that it would be interesting to play with the idea of using images in sculpture. I ended up not using a collage style of making it, but did use the paper, which I think conveys an interesting message. I also chose to experiment with the different ways that you can manipulate paper. I made some beads with paper, and thought about how to make something 3 dimensional from something that is traditionally 2 dimensional. I think that magazine is also an interesting material because I noticed that the ink started to bleed when I made the paper wet, something that I think I might like to expand more on in the future.

The original idea for this piece was far too complex to be able to finish it in the time that I was given, so I had to par it down quite a bit. However, I still would like to continue with my original idea in the future however. The original idea would require a lot of experimentation however, which I think would be best to do in an Independent Study. I did some research of the different ways to create wearable objects out of paper. I also did some research in recycled art, which use materials that are recycled.
