The Crow Cloak

blackbird
old turtle neck size large, old pair of black skinny jeans, scissors, needle and thread

Artist's Statement:

The idea behind the crow cloak came from the old turtlenecks of my dads that I sleep in. The overly large sleeves would remind me of wings. I have a bad habit of quarreling with the crows around my house, we have an interesting relationship. I have also been listening to a lot of the Cowboy Junkies lately, so I was also inspired by the fringes that country singers usually wear. Another large factor in this piece was the danceability of it, and the way that it flowed. I wanted to make something that is very sculptural but able very wearable, and make sure it would be comfortable.

Scissors have always been something that I like working with. I like the feel of cutting things up. I like that they make a permanent change, that if you mess up, it would have to be resewn. I think that it is powerful that something that you do would leave a scar no matter what, whether it is a hole, or a seam. I chose to work with my dad's old turtle neck too, because it is what I sleep in. I wanted to make this piece as close to my heart as possible, and make it comfortable, so I would wear it around the house.

My process was very experimental. the first thing that I did was probably make a sketch of what I wanted the final to maybe indefinitely look like. The collar ended up looking very different from the sketch, I decided to actually cut into the body of the turtle neck, and make it a kind of V neckline. I considered making the entire sleeves fringes too, like wings, and feathers, but I decided against it because the sleeves are my favorite part of the turtleneck. I decided instead to play on a classic occult theme, of eyes on the hands.Â
