Artist's Statement:
The idea for this project came from the halloween costumes that people sometimes have, that is just a clear umbrella and lights and streamers. I thought that it might be fun to draw a jellyfish umbrella. At first I thought that i might do an anime style with a full on person. In the sketches I experimented with different angles and perspectives. I thought that I might actually have rain coming off the umbrella, and water drops falling down.
When I actually when to draw it however, it proved to be more difficult, especially with procreate and digital media, which is very unforgiving. I ended up just experimenting with brushes, and trying to find one that worked. I ended up with the airbrush tools, which is fitting, since Jellyfish do have an almost airbrushed qualitity to them.
I wanted to use digital media because I associate jellyfish with light and luminessence, such as bioluminescence. I thought that since things that are digital kind of have a constant light shining out of them, it would be fitting. I used the airbrush tool in particular because when I first tried it, the result had the kind of translucent quality that I was looking for.
