Artist's Inspired

Artist's Statement:

The assignment was to create a piece inspired by different artists (2 minimum). I chose the artist Hollow Fingers, and another one that worked with round forms. I chose to make a vase, with a design that I came up with on it that represents my family. I chose to do a style similar to hollowfingers, which is very surface oriented, and combined it with the shapes of the second artist. I used needle tool to make my designs, and then used black stain and wiped it away to get the dark lines. I then went in and filled some areas with underglaze, and then finally covered it all in clear glaze.

I chose to make the sky behind us more dark, because I wanted to have a black white balance. I did this because I really wanted to up the contrast, and make the figures stand out more. I also decided to use limited color, to accentuate certain things. I also wanted to play with texture, so I used different patterns when doing the back and sides.

This vase is supposed to be a gift for my mother. I wanted to do our family because i want to have something that is intrinsically ours, that we can all have and share. The picture is full of meaning. You can see my foot is where my dad, the seal is, and I am holding the hand of my mom, the bear, ursa major. I chose to make my sister a willow tree, and you can see that her roots are in the water, which is the land of my dad. This is symbolic of her being in the netherlands, where my dad is from.
