Artist's Statement:

The idea was to create a map of some sort. It could be large scale or small scale, and it was pretty up to interpretation. I chose to do a map of where I go when I come home. For extra part of the map, I decided to paint and draw in the rest of my house, in a kind of sketchy, loose way. the idea behind this was to accentuate the thin lines of the map.

I used blue colored pencil first, because I was inspired by the idea of blueprints. Then I added yellow, and another lighter blue to fill in some of the white. I wanted to add yellow because I wanted to create a sense of light and darkness without using black. I thought that it would create some more interest and emphasis as well. in the end I did end up mixing some black into blue to create indigo, and some darker shades.

My process was pretty simple. I built up layers as I went, trying to create more contrast. When at first only the blue pencil left lots of white, I added yellow, and when that still felt to light, I added darker watercolor blues. I kept adding more and more blue and indigo untill finally i felt like I had something that could reach both side of the scale. In the end I thought that the mapping lines ended up being a little bit overpowered, however, I am happy with the result.
