Beautiful Oops

Woman shadowed

India ink and graphite pencil

12"X 9"

Artist's Statement:

I was given a couple of ink splotches on a piece of paper, and when I received them all I could see was a nude woman. I tried to make her someone that everyone found beautiful, but did not exactly fit the standards that pop culture illustrates. She has a splendid figure but also has strong shoulders and body hair.

This work is a combination of India ink and graphite pencils. The India ink was splattered beforehand, and I used B, B2, B4, and B6 pencils to create a form.

I started by scrawling a sequence of convex curves, because I read somewhere that the body does not include a concave curve. I then filled out the figure, are used shadows to accentuate different features I thought were interesting and important.
