Bench People

7"X 4"

Oil Pastel & India Ink

Artist's Statement:

The idea came from the 3 blobs on the page that I started out with. I saw 3 people, or the heads of 3 people. I didn't want to draw all of the bodies so I put them on a bench. Then I had the idea to make the bench by the ocean, because I was reminded of the Portland sound.

I used oil pastel mainly because it is a really soft material and I wanted to give a sense of family or close friends. Oil pastel is also really great for blending, which I did a lot to create a better sense of the ocean. I added some sky in the ocean to make it more ocean like. I also ended up blending the bench a lot, because I was unhappy with the first results. This is where oil pastel came in useful, since it made layering not so bad.

My process started with making the foreground first and then making the background. The bench was definetly the hard part, since I had to re-do it a couple of times. I chose to make it a little more organic looking than a regular bench would look, because I wanted to make the whole picture soft. I did the same with the horizon line, giving it a bit of a curve, and a slant.
