Artist's Statement:

This assignment was pretty self determined. The only restriction was that we could only use 3 pounds of clay. I chose to make a slab bowl using a hump mould. I knew I wanted to do sgraffito, because they artist that I chose does sgraffito. The subject that I chose was a wolf, and was a bit twisty around the legs. I ended up only doing one ring of triangles.

I wanted to play with a lot of negative and positive space, since sgraffito would be scratching away the underglaze. I also used a lot of energy, to make the bowl more interesting.  I did the wolf only at the very bottom of the bowl. I did the triangles outward, around the rim like a sun. I chose also to not do two rings of triangles, and to keep the sunlike pattern.

There is a bit of a story behind this work. I kept seeing this twisty looking wolf in my dreams. In my dreams, it had a lot more twistyness however. I am pretty proud of how the sketch came out. However, I didn't quite like how it came out in the clay. I feel like it could have been a little leaner.f
