Mars

6" X 8"

India ink, watercolor, sharpie roller pen

Artist's Statement:

The idea was to create something based off the prompt "life on mars". I created a kind of landscape of what I imagine life on mars would look like. My thinking was that since there is no atmosphere on mars, and there is lots of radiation, and it's pretty cold since there is no weather, all life would be in these domed enclosed spaces. I also had the idea to make a canyon, because I know mars has a really deep canyon. I also wanted to make it look a little desolate, since I don't think life on mars would be particularly fun for humans.

I chose to use india ink because I wanted to create more depth than just a sketch. I wanted to add some contrast, and have it be a night scene. I chose to use watercolor because I wanted to illustrate the redness of mars and also the minimal atmosphere, because it does have one it's just very thin.

I started out with sketching out what I thought a martian colony would look like. Then I added contrast and color.
