Virginia State-Wide Records

Colonial Population Estimates for Virginia

Notes:

  1. Virginia did not have counties until 1634. The number of counties for each year ending in 0 is from The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries, Newberry Library.

  2. Colonial Population estimates, 1610-1780, are from the US Census Bureau, Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1957, Chapter Z, p.756.

  3. The number of counties in 1780 and 1790 include counties that later became part of the state of West Virginia.

  4. 1790 population figures are from the US Census Bureau, Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790, Virginia. The white population figures come from adding the three categories of white people, and the black population figures come from adding slaves and other free people. Some "other free people" and a few slaves were likely Native Americans. Note that the totals per category and per county are known for the Virginia 1790 Federal Census, but the actual census records are lost.

  5. The number of counties in 1790 comes from the US Census Bureau's records for county summaries from the Virginia 1790 Census (See table of counties here, page 9.). The 78 counties included areas that would later become part of West Virginia. It does not include the 9 counties which in 1792 Virginia ceded to the US to become the state of Kentucky. The 78 counties does not include 3 newly formed counties in 1790 - Nottoway, Wythe and Kanawa; these were enumerated with their respective parent counties.

1704 Quit Rent Rolls

Land Tax - Names with acreage

Note that the preface to these records in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography notes that it appears that some of the persons paying taxes were renters or leasers of the land. That certainly appears to be the case with John Granger, who was apparently leasing land belonging to Richard Womack Jr, in addition to Granger's own land. John Granger had a patent for 72 acres in Henrico adjoining Richard Womack on 20 Oct 1704 (Patent Book 9:628). This 72 acres was apparently included in the 472 acres Granger was charged with in April 1705 All or most of the remaining 400 acres likely belonged to Richard Womack Jr.

10,000 Name Petition, 1776/7

This was a petition across Virginia to give all Christian denominations equal status, and eventually led to religious freedom and the disestablishment of the Church of England as the official church of Virginia. It can be difficult to tell where the signers lived, but from other surnames on the same page, we can take an educated guess.
