Edgecombe County

For some reason, some early Edgecombe deeds are in Halifax Co, NC deed books; these appear to be a handwritten copy of originals. Edgecombe was created in 1741, and Halifax was created from Edgecombe in 1759.

John Womack was for some reason rendered as John Vomit/Vommit in two of these deeds, but in the third was written as John Wamock. I have seen a few cases where Womack was written as Vomack. He likely pronounced his name like "Womick", which was misheard as Vomit. It is clear that John Womack was meant in all three deeds: he bought 450 acres from Arthur Whitehead in 1747, sold 100 acres of the 450 in 1748, and the final 350 acres in Feb 1749 (probably meaning 1750 New Style). The final deed mentions the 100 acres that "John Wamock" sold to Benjamin Scellars was bought by Jacob Whitehead, who also bought the remaining 350 acres, proving that "John Vomit" was John Womack.
