D1 - John Puckett the Turner
John Puckett the Turner - designated as D1 by Gee's book. However, she incorrectly attributes his father as John Puckett III (C3), also known as John Puckett the Shoemaker. John Puckett the Turner appears to be the son of William Puckett (B2), and completely missed by Gee. He was variously called "John Puckett the Turner", "John Puckett Turner", and at least once "Turner Puckett". This appellation was used to distinguish him from his first cousin and neighbor, John Puckett III (C3), aka, "John Puckett the Shoemaker".
A Turner was a skilled craftsman who made wood furniture and other objects with a wood lathe.
The first reference to the name "John Puckett the Turner" come from land processioning records in the records of Bristol Parish:
Returns of Processioning for the year 1731- Heny [Henry] Batt & Peter Baugh [processioned] all but Alexr Marshall with Wm Legan & Jno Puckett shoemaker wth Jno Puckett Turner they refusing.
It seems unlikely that John Puckett (C3) the Shoemaker was old enough in 1731 to have an adult son John who was old enough to be an established land owner. The above record shows the two Johns shared a property line, which the refused to procession, likely because they were already in agreement as to the line's location. Furthermore, the 1752 partial tax list of Chesterfield Co, VA shows John Puckett Sr (C3) as head of household with 2 other tithes (males over 16) - John Puckett Jr and Drury Puckett. In the same list, John Puckett Turner is head of a household in which he is the only tithe. Thus, it appears John Puckett (A3) had a son named John Jr who was not John Puckett the Turner.
John Puckett the Turner likely inherited land from his father William (B2).
