WILLIAM WOMACK AND ELIZABETH SHUMAN WOMACK
THE PRAYER BOOK of William and Elizabeth Womack lists Betsey Womack and
Lucy Womack, daughters of Allen Womack.
THIS DOCUMENT COMBINED WITH THE DEED FOR FREDERICK WOMACK WITNESSED BY
ALLEN WOMACK, WILLIAM WOMACK, AND LEVI THROWER ( 4 Mar 1791, Effingham Co
GA Deed Book A-B, p351-352), SUGGESTS THAT ALLEN AND WILLIAM ARE THE SONS
OF FREDERICK WOMACK.
FREDERICK BORN ABT 1730, DIED AFT 1793, IS SON OF WILLIAM WHO DIED 1766
IN HALIFAX CO NC
FREDERICK 1801-1835 IS SON OF WILLIAM 1755-1830. THE REPETITION OF THE
NAMES FREDERICK AND WILLIAM IN EACH OF 4 SUCCESSIVE GENERATIONS ALSO
SUGGESTS THAT THIS IS ALL ONE FAMILY LINE.
"GA Citizens and Soldiers of the American Revolution" by Robert S Davis,
page 64( 929.3 D) page 64 mentions Shadrach Inman and Frederick Womack as
participants in a meeting of patriots at Burke Co GA Jail.
"At a council of War held at headquarters at Burk Jail Jan 14 1779, for
the Purpose of considering the most expedient method to reclaim the

Martin Schumann and Tobita Schumann are included on the 1773 Salzberger
Expulsion List as "Schumann, Martin, husband of Tobita, 1773" and
"Schumann, Tobita, wife of Martin, 1773" in
" INHABITANTS OF EBENEZER AND IT'S DEPENDENCIES","Salzberger Expulsion
Lists", edited by Louis Bunker Rohrbach.
This may indicate that Martin Schumann and wife Tobita (Tobitha or
Tabitha) did not emigrate from Germany (Austria) until 1773. The earlier
Salzberger exiles arrived in Georgia from 1734 to 1741, establishing the
town of Ebenezer on the Savannah River, 25 miles north of Savannah,
Georgia.
Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church at Ebenezer, Georgia was founded by
these Salzberger emigrants. Construction of the current church structure
was completed in 1769.
Jerusalem Lutheran Church at Ebenezer, the only structure remaining of
the colonial town of New Ebenezer is located 9 miles east of Rincon, Ga,
on the banks of the Savannah River. The intact original structure has
weekly 11AM Sunday services.
"THE EBENEZER RECORD BOOK 1754-1781", translated and edited by George F.
Jones and Sheryl Esley, page 61, states "Martin, three years old, son of
Martin Schuman and his wife Tabitha, was baptized together with the ten
children aforementioned on May 11, 1773. The parents were sponsors".
SC ARCHIVES AND HISTORY SERIES S21309, Volume 0031, page oo617, 26 July
1774-"Shuman, Martin, Land Grant for 100 acres in Granville Co SC"
Martin Shumann received a South Carolina Colonial Land Grant dated June
23, 1774, stating "---do give and grant unto Martin Shumann---a tract of
land containing one hundred acres on a branch of Savannah River called
Black Swamp in Saint Peter's Parish, Granville County, bounding west on
the said Martin Shumann.". This indicates that Martin owned other land
prior to June 23, 1774, on the eastern boundary of the tract specified in
this grant.
"TWO CENTURIES OF LAWTONVILLE BAPTIST 1775-1975" by Coy K. Johnson, page
XVIII, states "There is extant a record of Baptist preaching at Black
Swamp in 1762 and at Pipe Creek in 1763. Farther down and away from the
river in the area later known as the Lawtonville community, but then
referred to as the Pine Barrens, the earliest known settlers were Nathan
Johnson, Martin Shuman (probably of the Salzberger settlement in Georgia)
and the Griner family (originally Salzberger emigrants)".
This places Martin Shumann in South Carolina, Beaufort District,
Granville County, St. Peter's Parish, "---farther down and away from the
river in the area later known as Lawtonville", not necessarily in
1762-1763, but definitely by the time he received the colonial land grant
for 100 acres on Black Swamp, June 23, 1774.

EFFINGHAM CO GA MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS 1791-1819 Book I pages 124-126
The will of Martin Shuman, written in 1793, probated 1798, identifies him
as a resident of Effingham County. The will also includes "PRIMUS, It is
my desire that my daughter Elizabeth Womack shall have all of the cattle
I intended for her use".
The eldest son of William and Elizabeth Womack, William H. Womack, was
born in 1787. Documentation entered later in this summary establishes the
relationships of the Shuman and Womack families as having common property
boundaries and jointly appearing as signatories on legal documents,
including wills, deeds, and administration of estates. This 1787 birth of
William H. Womack may indicate that the Shuman family arrived in
Effingham County prior to 1787.
Martin Shuman's will, probated 1798, identifies him as owner of 400 acres
on the North side of the Great Ogeechee River, Effingham County, Georgia.
This property is further identified in Effingham County records as being
located at the area where Black Creek enters the Ogeechee River.( Add
citation) Today, Black Creek joins the Ogeechee River approximately one
half mile south of the intersection of Interstate Highway I-16 and the
Ogeechee, or approximately one mile south of
Meldrim, Georgia.
The last item in Martin Shuman's will states "And as I have an estate
left me in Germany by my father Henry Shuman----".
A Prayer Book printed in England between 1752 and 1760, according to
archivist A. M. Oakley of the Cathedral, City and Diocesan Record
Office, Canterbury, Kent, U. K., documents the family of William and
Elizabeth Womack, their children, and several extended family members.
This original, unrestored prayer book is still in possession of a Womack
descendant. Copies of pertinent pages of the prayer book are available.
The first entry in this prayer book states "Poly Inman, Daughter of
Shadrach and Elizabeth his wife was born the_____August 1780".
The second entry reads "Wm Womack son of Wm and Elizabeth his wife was
born the 19th Feby 1787".
Documentation entered later in this summary links William and Elizabeth
Womack to the heirs of Shadrach Inman and provides reason to consider
that Elizabeth Shuman Womack may be the mother of Poly Inman and the
widow of Shadrach Inman.
January 27,1806, Martin Henry Shuman (b1770, d 1840-1850), son of Martin
and Tabitha Shuman, sold to his brother James Shuman (b1777, d 1828), 200
acres of a 400 acre tract originally granted to his father Martin Shuman.
The sale document was witnessed by Martin Shuman, Henry Shuman, William
Shuman, William Henry Womack and Wylly Womack. The last line of the
Document states "personally appeared William Womack".
William Henry Womack (b 1787) is the son of William and Elizabeth Womack.
Wylly Womack on this document may be brother of William Womack
(1755-1830) and son of Frederick Womack (c 1730-living 1792).
May 1st 1815, Warrant , surveyed March 22, 1816 " for James Shumann who

William Henry Shuman (b 1780, d 1806), son of Martin and Tabitha,
married June 15, 1801 Mary Ann Bridges. Soon after his death in 1806,
his widow Mary Ann Bridges Shuman married John Bandy. The land owned by
John Bandy, cited on the 1816 plat of James Shuman as "bounded west by
Martin Shuman and John Bandy", may be land originally owned by Martin
Shuman and Tabitha, later inherited by William Henry Shuman. John Bandy
may have acquired the land by his marriage to Mary Ann Bridges Shuman.
This John Bandy may be the John William Bandy cited above, or his son.

In 1792, Frederick Womack and John Shuman (son of Martin Schuman) were
witnesses to a deed (Deed Book A:200). Annals ofGA pg 53
Frederick's son William Womack, Martin Shuman, and John William Bandy all
owned land on the Ogeechee River near where Black Creek enters the
Ogeechee. This is 1/2-1 mile south of where Interstate Hwy. I-16 crosses
the Ogeechee, and approximately 1 mile south of Meldrim, GA. This
suggests that Frederick lived in the same area along the Ogeechee.
William Womack of Effingham Co. purchased 200 acres in Effingham Co.
November 1822, sale completed and recorded 23 Feb 1825. The 200 acres
was "sold as property of Thomas Womack at Sheriff's Sales to satisfy to
executions in favor of William A. Greene for Forty Seven Dollars and
Seventy Five Cents----Said Land joins William Womack on west and north,
James Shuman on southwest and on all other sides vacant.". One of the
witnesses on the sale document was Hester Brower. Hester Ann Womack
Brower (b 3 Jan 1794, d 1 Mar 1870), was daughter of William and
Elizabeth Womack. Thomas Womack was probably Thomas H. Womack (b 15 Nov
1791, d 1837), son of William and Elizabeth Womack, who married 1 Feb
1822, Eleanor Jones, daughter of Francis Jones and Mary "Polly" Mills
Jones. About 1822, Thomas H Womack moved from Effingham Co. to Screven

Shadrach Inman, son of Shadrach Inman (b 25 Jan 1742, d 7 Oct 1831) and
Mary Jane McPeters (b 9 Jan 1749, d 11 Jun 1830) was born about 1765 and
died 18 Aug 1780 in the Battle of Musgrove's Mill, SC, on the Enoree
River. He entered the SC Militia as Lieutenant and was Captain at time
of death. His widow was entitled to a land grant for his Revolutionary
War service.

of Shadrach Inman and list "Elizabeth_______, wife of Shadrach" and "

Mary.
1785 Land Grant, 575 acres to heirs of Shadrach Inman. This land was in
Washington Co. in 1785, but Hancock Co. in 1787.
31 Jan 1797 "William Womack and Elizabeth Womack, wife of the said
William Womack of Effingham Co., Georgia to John Wilkinson of Hancock Co.
Georgia sold for 100 pounds---Half that tract of land containing 575
acres on Jacksons Fork of Shoulderbone Creek in Hancock County. Said
Tract of land was granted to Shadrach Inman's Heirs by his Honor John
Habersham on 17 May 1784." This document is recorded with plat drawing in
Washington Co., Georgia Surveyors Plat Book A-1784 and Hancock Co GA
deed book pages 404-405.
27 March 1797 Samuel Alexander of Warren Co., Georgia, guardian of Polly
Inman, "for 134 pounds, 3 shillings, 4 pence, sold toThomas Hill of
Hancock Co, a tract of Land on the waters of Jackson Fork of Shoulderbone
Creek containing 287 and 1/2 acres bounded------being one equal half of
a tract containing 575 acres formerly granted to the heirs of Shadrach
Inman." Hancock County Deed Book E, pages 129,130
6 July 1798 " Samuel Alexander, guardian of Polly Inman estate sold 287
and 1/2 acres land of Polly's estate to John Wilkinson." This was the
remainder of the 575 acre tract noted in the previous paragraph.HANCOCK
CO DEED BOOK E pages 129-130
These documented transactions indicate that the 575 acres granted to the
heirs of Shadrach Inman was equally divided between Mary " Polly" Inman,
a child of Shadrach and Elizabeth, and Elizabeth, widow of Shadrach.
The inclusion of " Poly Inman born Aug 1780 daughter of Shadrach Inman
and Elizabeth his wife" in the Prayer Book of Elizabeth, wife of William
Womack and the sale of land of the heirs of Shadrach Inman by William and
Elizabeth Womack of Effingham Co. suggest a link between these families.
An undocumented suggested birthdate of 1775 for Elizabeth Shuman Womack
has been proposed by a recent publication. An incorrect posting on a
Shuman message site stated that Elizabeth Shuman's baptism was recorded
in the Ebenezer Record Book,
but thorough review of the" EBENEZER RECORD BOOK" by A G Voight , 1929,
shows that IT CONTAINS NO RECORD OF ELIZABETH SHUMAN. Page 51 states
"Martin,3 years old, son of Martin Schuman and his wife Tabitha, was
baptized---on May 11,1773". Page 61 states "George Henry, 4years and
Elisabeth 2 years and 3 months old children of Martin Shiedman, being
baptiz. on the 12th day of Novbr. 1777." "EBENEZER RECORD BOOK 1754-1781
EDITED by GEORGE F JONES" documents the same data quoted above.
Elizabeth's marriage before 1780 to Shadrach Inman, as implied in her
Prayer Book by "Poly Inman Daughter of Shadrach and Elizabeth his wife
was born the---August 1780", followed by "Wm Womack son of Wm and
Elizabeth his wife was born the19th Feby 1787" suggests an earlier
birthdate than that of the 1775 Shiedman record. The fact that she was
listed as Elizabeth Womack in 1793 in her father's will also indicates
her marriage prior to 1793.
This summary of Shuman, Womack, and Inman documents contains no absolute
proof that Elizabeth Womack in the Prayer Book is Elizabeth Shuman, or
that Elizabeth Shuman was the widow of Shadrach Inman. It does contain
multiple documented relationships between these families which support
the probability that Elizabeth Shuman married first Shadrach Inman, and
second William Womack.
Shadrach Inman left a widow, Elizabeth Inman, and a daughter, Mary, as
documented in a Georgia Land Grant:
"6th April 1784,. These are to certify that Capt. Shadrach Inman was a
refugee from the State of Georgia and while such was killed in battle in

By 1784, Frederick Womack had settled in Georgia, and on 6 Dec 1784
received a state grant for 200 acres in Effingham County, which lies
immediately north of Chatham County and is separated from South Carolina
by the Savannah River.
Original Headright Grant Document for this 200 acres is at GA ARCHIVES,
Headright and Bounty Grants, RGSGS # 3-4-5, Box # 246, "County of
Effingham-unto Frederick Wamock -200 acres his own headright in said
county on Horse Creek joining land of---Boshars, 6th December 1784"
executed 11th Feburary 1785.
Frederick Womack had acquired prior to 1791, at least 400 acres in the
vicinity of Horse Creek: his Rev War Grant in 1787 of 200 acres
(Effingham Co Plat Bk 000:391), 100 acres on the north bank of Horse
creek purchased from Lemuel Lanier Jr (son of Lemuel Lanier and brother
of Lewis Lanier d 1792 of Lotts Creek, Bulloch Co GA) , and 100 acres
from William Blackman. Lemuel Lanier b 1757 Sold 100 acres on Horse
Creek, Effingham Co GA to Frederick Wommock prior to 1791.This land was
adjoining a 200 acre land grant in 1784 to Frederick Wamock for his SC
Rev War service .
Deed from Frederick Wommock to William Bridger dated 8 Mar 1791, 355

Horse Creek empties into the Ogeechee River 1 mile west of Rocky Ford,
Screven Co GA and 1 mile east of the Old Savannah Rd, just south of the
Rocky Ford- Portal Rd.The land mentioned would be about 1-3 miles north
or northwest of Rocky Ford.

John William Bandy of Effingham Co., GA, planter, sold to Frederick
Womack, planter, also of Effingham Co., 200 acres on Big Ogeechee River.
Also cited in Annals of GA, Effingham Co. pg 37 also pg 59.
The deed was witnessed by Allen Womack, William Womack, and Levi Thrower,
the first two apparently sons of Frederick Womack..This purchase
immediately preceeds the sales of land by Frederick Womack to William
Bridger on 8 Mar 1791 and Jacob Dunn on 12 Mar 1791 outlined above.

In 1792, Frederick Womack and John Shuman (son of Martin Schuman) were
witnesses to a deed EFFINGHAM CO GA Deed Book A, p 200. also recorded
in ANNALS of GA, pg 53.
