A lot of folks on the Web are confused about where the Puckett family in Virginia lived.
In the 1600s, they lived in what is now southeast Chesterfield County, Virginia, but was then part of Henrico County. The Puckett family was in Henrico as early as 1665, several decades before the founding of the town of Richmond. Modern Chesterfield Co was formed from Henrico in 1749.
More exactly, their land was on a creek called Ashen Swamp, which is on modern maps as Ashton Creek. See the 1888 map of Chesterfield (https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3883c.la001239/?r=0.628,0.387,0.247,0.102,0). If you link in the easternmost district, colored pink, you will see 'Ashen Creek' flowing into the Appomattox River. Some of the family names on the map such as Ashbrook and Walthall were neighbors of the Puckett and Womack family, but by 1888, all the Pucketts and Womacks were gone.
If you drive north on Interstate 95 from Petersburg to Richmond, you are driving through or very close to the original land of John Puckett (1665 Land Patent) and Richard Womack (1679 Patent). Ashton Creek flows under I-95 just north of the Exit 58 interchange with Virginia State Route 620.
The Puckett family appears to have owned land on both sides of Ashen Swamp. Henrico records reference "Pucketts Run", which appears to have been a small tributary of Ashen Swamp, flowing into it from the south. Also, in several Puckett deeds, Rooty Run is mentioned; this small creek flowed into Ashen Swamp from the north. I don't know exactly where either Pucketts Run or Rooty Run are located.
Third Branch of Swift Creek
Swift Creek run through the middle of Chesterfield County, and Third Branch flows into it. See 1888 Map - https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3883c.la001239/?r=0.366,0.335,0.172,0.071,0.
A John Puckett had a 1736 Land Patent on Third Branch (VPB 17:27). Presumed brothers Thomas, William and Douglass Puckett had a 1746 Land Patent also on Third Branch (VPB 25:97). The 1888 map shows families that were neighbors of the Puckett family - Ferguson, Perdue, Belcher, Patram, etc - but the Puckett family appears to have moved on by 1888.
Church Parishes
The Church of England was the official church of Virginia colony. Besides counties, Virginia was divided into a number of church parishes, that often overlapped county boundaries. See Bristol Parish for more info. See also https://vagenweb.org/parishes.htm.
Land of John Puckett (B1)
John Puckett (B1) left a will dated 12 May 1716, proved 1 June 1719, naming wife Elizabeth [Allen] Puckett. He named several daughters, and 4 sons to equally divide his land AFTER his wife's death - John, Joseph, Timothy and Abraham. In the 1705 Henrico Co, VA quit rent list, John Puckett paid taxes on 215 acres. By the time of his death, it appears his holdings were down to about 100 acres, because each of his sons had 25 acres from deeds. His son, John Puckett III, also known as John Puckett the Shoemaker, paid taxes on 108 acres in 1736.
John Puckett III was the executor of the estate of his mother, Elizabeth Allen Puckett, whose probate was completed the first Monday of June 1736 (Henrico Co, VA W&D:1725-1737: 552-3), the probate records mention payments to John Puckett and Joseph Puckett. It is likely John Puckett III paid taxes on all of his father's land until his mother's probate was complete, at which point the land was split between the 4 brothers. But by 1736, Abraham Puckett had died, and Timothy Puckett had moved, first to Bertie Co, NC, and then to Amelia Township in South Carolina.
In short, here is what became of the land of the 4 brothers:
1) John Puckett III (the Shoemaker) - willed land to cousin Sarah Westbrook for her life, then to son Stephen Puckett. Sarah Westbrook sold the land to William Carroll, but only for the duration of her life. At some point, Stephen Puckett appears to have conveyed the right to this land to his brother Daniel Puckett. After the death of Sarah Westbrook, Daniel Puckett sold the land to James Walthall.
2) Joseph Puckett died before June 1750, and his share was inherited by his son, Joseph Puckett Jr, who sold it to William Walthall.
3) Timothy Puckett moved away in the 1720s, first to North Carolina, then to South Carolina. He was named as owning his share of his father's land in 1755, but by 1772, the land was owned by Timothy's nephew, Daniel Puckett, who sold it to John Norris.
4) Abraham Puckett married Susannah Womack. Susannah Womack's mother was Susannah Trent; Susannah Womack's father was William Womack, son of Richard Womack Sr and Mary Puckett (B4 in Gee's book). Thus, Abraham Puckett married his first cousin once removed. Abraham Puckett left a will naming daughter Rachel and the child his wife was pregnant with, who was named Susannah Puckett. Rachel Puckett died, leaving Susannah Puckett as Abraham's sole heir. Susannah Puckett married Francis Womack. Francis and Susannah Womack sold Abraham's share to William Walthall. FYI, the key to understanding that Abraham Puckett's wife was Susannah Womack is that Daniel Nunnally sued Susannah Puckett for misadministration of Abraham Puckett's estate. Daniel Nunally was Susannah Womack Puckett's step father. William Womack's will mentions wife Susannah and daughter Susannah (and other children); Henrico orphan's court records show that Daniel Nunally married Susannah, widow of William Womack. Daniel Nunally had put up a security bond for step-daughter Susannah's administration of her deceased husband's will, and sued Susannah when he felt she was not performing and he might lose his bond money. So, there were three generations of females named Susannah: Susannah Trent married to William Womack, Susannah Womack married to Abraham Puckett, and Susannah Puckett married to Francis Womack. John Robertson, who was the guardian of Susannah Puckett, orphan of Abraham Puckett, bought and sold land from Francis Womack.
John Puckett (B1) died in Henrico Co, VA, in the area south of the James River which became Chesterfield Co, VA in 1749. Between 1751 and 1772, the four shares of John's land were sold to John Norris and members of the Walthall family. Note that John Puckett's (B1) land was either part of or adjacent to the Virginia Land Patents of his father and brothers, which I will discuss later. Specifically, his land was adjacent to that of Womack Puckett and John Puckett the Turner.
Note that Daniel Puckett acquired two of the four shares of his grandfather John Puckett (B1) and sold them. Daniel also sold two other pieces of land but these were parts of a Virginia Land Patent to Daniel Puckett: 10 Sep 1755 VPB 31:626 Film # 008140675, image 628, patent to Daniel Puckett, 76 acres, Chesterfield, mentions John Puckett the Turner & Richard Womack, Ashen Swamp, Rooty Run. Daniel sold this land in two deeds:
Chesterfield Co, VA DB 5:172 img 99- 6 June 1760 - Daniel Pucket to Francis Walthall, Ashen Swamp, 25 acres, part of grant to Daniel 10 Sep 1755. Land between John Pucket & William Bass
Chesterfield Co, VA DB 5:427, Film # 007894506, img 602, Daniel Puckett & wife Anne to Francis Walthall, deed 11 Mar 1765, mentions John Pucket the turner & Richard Womack, 50 acres MOL - description matches patent VPB 31:626
From the deeds, it is possible to get somewhat of a picture of the neighborhood by seeing the neighbors, which varied somewhat over time:
Joseph Puckett's share - sold in 1751 by Joseph Puckett Jr to William Walthall, adjacent to John Puckett (probably meaning his brother, John Puckett III) and John Puckett the Turner.
Abraham Puckett's share - sold in 1755 by Francis and Susannah Puckett Womack to William Walthall, adjacent to Richard Kennon, Womack Puckett, Timothy Puckett
Timothy Puckett's share - sold in 1772 by Daniel Puckett to John Norris, adjacent to Sarah Westbrook, Benjamin Walthall, Womack Puckett, William Walthall
John Puckett's share - sold in 1780 by Daniel Puckett to James Walthall, adjacent William Walthall, the said James Walthall (the buyer), John Norris.
I don't know how these properties were oriented, but I like to think about them as 4 like 4 squares arranged in a line west to east:
1) Joseph's share - on the west end, with John Puckett the Turner to the west, and Joseph's brother John Puckett III (aka, John Puckett the Shoemaker) to the east. Note that other records indicate John Puckett the Turner and John Puckett the Shoemaker shared a property line circa 1731.
2) John III's share - between the shares of Joseph (sold to William Walthall) to the west and Timothy (sold to John Norris) to the east.
3) Timothy's share - between the shares of John III (owned for life by Sarah Westbrook, leased to William Carroll, sold to Francis Walthall) to the west and Abraham (sold to William Walthall) to the east. Also adjacent Womack Puckett, who I think was to the north.
4) Abraham's share - on the east end, with the share of Timothy Puckett to the west. To the east was Richard Kennon, and Womack Puckett to the north.
