Obituary of Sid Womack - The Covington news; (Covington, Newton Co, GA); 21 Feb 1936, Image 8, Column 5 - Extract: died age 59, at his farm near Mansfield (in Newton Co, GA), born in Jasper Co, member of Concord Methodist Church. Survived by wife Berta Cargile Womack, two daughters, Mrs Irene Sigman of Monroe, Mrs Mollie Banks of Newton Co; three sons Oscar and Barrett Womack of Porterdale and Tommy Womack of Jasper Co; two brothers, Henry Womack of Covington and Ed Womack of Walton Co; one sister Mrs Georgia Digby of Jasper Co; 15 grandchildren; and a niece and nephew who lived with him, Bessie Womack [sic, Cargile] and Buck Womack [sic, Cargile]. [Note that the nephew and niece were listed in the obituary with surname Womack, but were actually Bessie and Oswell Cargile, the children of Sid Womack's brother-in-law. Oswell must have been nicknamed Buck.]

1850 Mortality FC, Jasper Co, GA, p.358

In a row:

  • Sophronia Wammack, 1, female, white, free, died May 1850 of worms, sick 10 days [probably dau of Elberry Womack, since Mortality Census was usually taken in the same order as the Population Census, and Sophronia listed right before Leasy Millage, probable dau of Thomas Womack and Lavina Dennis (see below). Elberry Womck family was right before his father Thomas Womack in the Population schedule.]

  • Leasy Millage, 40, female, white, free, died May 1850 of unknown, sick 12 months [Probable dau of Thomas Womack and Lavina Dennis, more below.]

On same page:

  • Lincey A Lumsden, 6, female, white, free, died Dec 1849 of yellow jaundice, sick 10 days [Sister of Laney Lumsden who married James Womack, and namesake of their daughter, Elencia Ann "Linsey" Womack.]

Leasy Womack - (c1810 - May 1850) - Likely daughter of Thomas Womack and Lavina Dennis; known only from the 1850 Mortality Census of Jasper Co, GA, which listed people who had died in the previous 12 months. She is listed as Leasy Millage, who died in May 1850, age 40. Leasy may have been the common law wife of a Mr Millage/Milledge. Leasy was listed right after Sophronia Womack, probably daughter of Elberry Womack (see above) in the Mortality Census. Leasy's apparent daughters, Nancy Millage (age 15) and Mary Millage (age 7) were living with grandparents Thomas and Lavinia Womack in the 1850 Federal Census. The Thomas Womack household in the 1840 FC of Jasper Co shows a female 20-29 and a female 0-4 who were likely Leasy and her daughter Nancy. In the 1860 FC of Jasper Co, the widow Vina (Lavina) Womack has the same girls living with her, but with the Barnes surname - Nancy Barnes (age 26), and Polly Barnes (age 17); Polly was the most common nickname for Mary at that time. In the 1870 FC of Jasper, the same women are with Lavina Womack (age 88), but now listed with the Womack surname (spelled Wamack by the census enumerator) - Nancy Womack (age 35) and Mary Womack (age 27). Also listed with Lavina in 1870 are Mary's children (so Lavina's great-grandchildren) Georgia Womack (age 4) and James E [Edward] A Womack (age 2).

Henry N Stone family - Henry Stone married Sarah C Barnes (m 26 Dec 1855, Jones Co, GA); they were the parents of Julia Stone (born circa 1857) who later married Linton Womack, son of Elberry Womack. In the 1860 FC of Jasper Co, GA, Henry Stone (age 25) was listed with wife Sarah C (age 27), dau Julia A (age 2), mother Nancy Stone (age 54), and Bedy Killgo [sic, Kilgore], probably an aunt. By 1870, Henry Stone apparently had a 'mid-life crisis'. Jasper Co, GA Superior Court Minutes 1859-1870, p.595, (LDS Film # 00862816, image 658/698) show Henry N Stone was indicted by a grand jury in April 1870 for vagrancy; on p.596 (image 659), Henry N Stone was indicted for squatting on land belonging to the estate of Matthew Whitfield; and on p.597 (image 659), Henry N Stone and Nancy Wammack were indicted for adultery, with Henry N Stone described as a married man, and Nancy Wammack as an unmarried woman. In the 1870 FC of Jasper Co, GA, Henry Stone's wife, mother and daughter were living with Lavinia Womack, as well as 'Beda' Kilgore, who had been living with Henry Stone in the 1860 FC. In the 1870 FC of Jasper Co, GA, Henry Stone was listed on the next page from his family. By the 1880 FC of Jasper Co, GA, Henry Stone had reconciled with his wife, and they were living together again, with his mother Nancy living with them. Strangely, Henry's daughter Julia is listed with him as age 22 and single, though she had married Linton Womack in 1877, and was also listed in the 1880 FC of Jasper Co as Julia Wommock, age 21 and married to Linton Wommock. Perhaps a neighbor gave the info on Henry Stone's family, and did not have all the details correct.
