The first known Womack record in North Carolina is the 1747 deed of John Womack in Edgecombe Co, NC. This was also the first known American Womack record outside Virginia.

Edgcombe County: formed 4 Apr 1741 from Beaufort Co, Bertie Co & Craven Co.

  • First known Womack record: 2 May 1747, deed, Halifax Co, NC DB 3:9, Arthur Whitehead of Isle of White Co, VA to John Vommitt [sic, Womack] of Edgecombe Co, NC; this was the first known American Womack record in North Carolina, and the first outside Virginia.

    • Note: John Womack was in Edgecombe for a few years in the 1740s before moving on to Johnston Co, NC. There was no other known Womack activity until sons of Carter Womack moved from Halifax Co to Eddecombe Co circa the 1820s.

Granville County: formed 28 June 1746 from Edgecombe Co.

Northampton County: formed by Dec 1741 from Bertie Co.

  • First known Womack record: 24 Feb 1752, deed, Northampton Co, NC DB 2:59, James Lewis of Northampton Co, NC, planter, to William Womack of Brunswick Co, VA. William Womack sold the land in 1755.

    • Branches: William Womack (B.16-A). Also, Mathias B Womack (part of Branch B.16-E) married in Northampton in 1848.
