Virginia

The Womack family was in Virginia by 1673, in Henrico County, the first place in America with Womack records. All known American Womack records are in Virginia, until 1747, when the first known North Carolina Womack record occurred.

Amelia County: formed 25 Mar 1735 from Brunswick Co and Prince George Co.

  • Records here.

    • Note: Most Womack families in Amelia Co were in the area which became Prince Edward Co in 1754. The Womack families in Amelia Co in the 1780s were in the area which became Nottoway Co in 1789.

Brunswick County: formed 1 Jan 1733 (New Style) from Prince George, Isle of Wight, Surry.

    • Note: Brunswick Co was authorized 17 Dec 1720, but remained attached to Prince George Co. Apparently, there was not enough population to form a county until 1733.

    • First known Womack record: Deed Book 2:680 (477), 24 Mar 1744 (New Style) deed, William Johnson to John Womack.

    • Branches: John Womack (B.17); William Womack (B.16) and his extended family; Richard Womack (B.11).

  • Records here.

  • Note: The family of Richard Womack (B.11) lived in the part of Brunswick which became Lunenburg in 1746. William Womack (B.16-A) lived in the part of Brunswick which became Greensville Co in 1781.

Charles City County: formed 1634 (original county).

    • First known Womack record: Charles City Co, VA Record Book 1692-1700:155, 4 Oct 1692, deed John Farley Sr to John Womack.

    • Branches: Family of John Womack and Mary Akins (A-B). In 1703, the area of Charles City Co south of the James River was cut off to form Prince George Co, and Womack record continued there. Around the year 1800, some Womacks moved into Charles City Co (which was then only on the north side of the James River), according to tax lists.

    • Records here.

    • Note: A 1646 land patent to David Jones in Charles City Co (Book 2:94) mentions Margaret Weym'ke (Weymarke). Although the names is similar, she was NOT A WOMACK.

Goochland County: formed 1 May 1728 from Henrico Co, VA.

Henrico County: formed 1634 (original county).

    • First known Womack record: VA Land Patent 6:447, 15 Mar 1673 (Old Style 1672), patent to Richard Womack. This is the first known Womack record in America.

    • Branches: The Core Womack family (A), and most major branches of the family originated in Henrico. After the formations of Goochland Co in 1728, and Chesterfield Co in 1749, there were no more Womacks living in Henrico for a few decades, until 1787, when some Womacks appeared in tax lists and other records.

    • Early records here. Post-1749 records here.

Isle of Wight County: formed 1634 (original county).

  • First known Womack record: Prince George Co, VA Wills & Deeds 1713-1728:898, 10 June 1726, deed, William Womack of Isle of Wight Co to Abraham Womack of Prince George Co,

  • Branches: William Womack (B.16).

King George County: formed 23 Apr 1721 from Richmond Co.

    • Note: See Stafford County, below.

Lunenburg County: formed 1 May 1746 from Brunswick Co.

  • First known Womack record: Lunenburg Co, VA Deed Book 1:1, 5 May 1746, Richard Womack witness to deed from Anthony Pouncey to John Owen. The family of Richard Womack (B.11) was living in the area of Brunswick which became Lunenburg in 1746, and Richard Womack was witness to the very first recorded deed for Lunenburg. Richard Womack's family lived in the part of Lunenburg which became modern Charlotte Co in 1765.

    • Branches: Richard Womack (B.11); William Womack (B.16); Alexander Womack Jr (B.12-A); Josiah Womack (B.13-B); Thomas Womack III (son of Thomas, B.13-A).

    • Note: William Womack (B.16) had a VA Patent in Lunenburg in 1749 (Patents 27:450) which he sold 2 Sep 1750 to Richard Lunday (Lunenburg DB 2:135); the Lundy name proves this was the same William Womack then living in Southampton Co, VA next to Edward Lundy.

    • Note: Clement Read had a land patent in Lunenburg in 1750 (Patents 29:112), described as adjacent land of Abraham Womack, Thomas Spencer & Richard Womack. When he sold the land the same year to Thomas Spencer (Lunenburg DB 2:215), the wording of the patent was used to describe the neighbors. TODO - discussion of Richard Womack's land in Lunenburg.

Prince George County: formed 23 Apr 1703 from Charles City Co, VA.

Stafford County: created 1664 from Westmoreland Co

    • Note: Claim of marriage of James Brown to Sarah Woemack, 11 May 1760. This comes from the book King George County, Virginia Marriage Bonds 1715-1787, by Joel Ricks, 1937, p.8. According to the book, the info was "taken from a photostat copy of St. Paul's Register". Note that in 1760, the St. Paul's Parish covered the area of Stafford County and King George County, so this marriage may have occurred in either county.. The more recent book, St. Paul's Parish Register: Stafford-King George Counties, Virginia, 1715-1798, has the bride's name as Sarah Waemark, probably a variation of Waymark, which is not Womack. NOT A WOMACK.

Surry County: formed 1652 from James City Co, VA.

  • First known Womack record: Court records, 1712-1718, mention Richard Womack in a 1714 case; from names of other people in the records, this was Richard son of John Womack and Mary Akins. It does not appear he actually lived in Surry Co, and there are records of him later in Prince George Co, VA.

    • Branches: Richard Womack (A-BB), son of of John Womack and Mary Akins.
