Elizabeth Womack Hatchett

From The Old Free State, Landon Covington Bell, Vol 2, 1927, p.281, Chapter VII, Lunenburg Cousins Continued, Hatchett:

John Hatchett, will in Chesterfield Co, VA dated 31 May 1747, WB 1:204, had sons William, Thomas, John & Edward; had daughters Mary, Elizabeth & Hester.

Elizabeth Womack Hatchett is listed in the 1750 will of her mother, Mary Farley Womack, and in the various estate records of her brother, William Womack. However, her husband's name is not listed in any of these records. Her husband was John Hatchett, son of the John Hatchett who made his will in 1747. John Hatchett, husband of Elizabeth Womack, was on the 1737 "tax list" of southside Henrico Co, VA as John Hatchett, Jr, and the tax record indicates he won a judgment against Abraham Womack, his brother-in-law. The area of Henrico where Womacks and Hatchetts lived became Chesterfield Co in 1749. John Hatchett (Jr) appears in several records, but I have so far been unable to find a record of John Hatchett (Jr) that lists his wife's name.

The article in Old Free State describes John Hatchett (Jr) as married, lived in Chesterfield Co, VA, and had children John Hatchett, Josiah Hatchett and "several daughters". The court orders from Charlotte Co, VA for the estate of William Womack list "Josiah Hatchett, Joseph Tolbert and Martha his wife, who was Martha Hatchett, and Judith Furkering, who was Judith Hatchett, and William Hatchett, children and representatives of Elizabeth Hatchett, dec’d, who was Elizabeth Womack". Note that John Hatchett is not listed as a son, but it appears William Hatchett is; this appears to be the result of confusion. William Hatchett in the court orders was actually the grandson of Elizabeth Womack Hatchett, see the deposition of his mother Sarah Hatchett, typed out below. William Hatchett's father was John Hatchett (III), son of John Hatchett (Jr) and Elizabeth Womack. The deposition of John Hatchett's (III) wife Sarah shows that Elizabeth Womack Hatchett was alive in Spring 1799 and died shortly afterwards after signing over her share of her brother William Womack's estate to grandson William Hatchett in a document signed by Sarah Hatchett, John Hatchett Sr (III) and John Hatchett Jr (IV). The deposition further states that John Hatchett Sr (III) and John Hatchett Jr (IV) were dead by the date of the deposition, 25 Apr 1806.

Josiah Hatchett was on the 1790 tax list of Amelia Co, VA. John Hatchett was on the same list with himself and William Hatchett as white male tithables.

John Hatchett [W.H1.3] paid taxes in Henrico County in 1736. He sold 100 acres in Chesterfield County to Richard Perdue in 1753. John was a blacksmith by trade and kept an ordinary.

John was dead by 5 January 1770 when Chesterfield County granted administration of his estate to Joseph Frith.
