More Puckett Research

Introduction

I am Robert E Burke, and this is my Womack website.  My contact info.

I am also a Puckett descendant via Mary Puckett, wife of Richard Womack.

I posted a small bit of Puckett research here:  Puckett Research.  This page is a deeper dive into the Puckett family.

In 1958, Christine South Gee published what is still the best resource on the Puckett family with her book, The roots and some of the branches of the Puckett family tree.  Also, here.

Gee's research is great, though I disagree in some places.  I try to use Gee's numbering system.  This page can be thought of as supplemental to Gee's work, with several additions and corrections.

There is a great deal of incorrect and conflicting Puckett info on the Internet.  Most is undocumented, and most of that is undocumentable, because it is fiction.

I will attempt to present my evidence with actual documentation.

There are several assertions about the Puckett family floating on the web, some from Gee, but most with far less authority.  Some of these assertions:

Incorrect Origins

Claims of early Puckett headrights

Virginia Patent Book 1:441 (008570197:442) - 14 July 1737, Capt Henry Brown of James City County, 2250 acres, for importation of several people including WM PACKETT.   NOTE:  This may be a William Puckett, as researcher Gary Curtis Puckett  believed, but there is no proof.  The vast majority of Puckett individuals in the southern colonies during the colonial era appear to descend from John Puckett (1655 land patent) of Henrico, Co, VA.

Virginia Patent Book 1:443 (008570197:444) - 6 Aug 1637, John Graves of Elizabeth City Co, VA, 600 acres, for importation of several people including JONE PACKETT (difficult to read in image).  NOTE:  This seem to be Joan Packett, a female, and not John Puckett.

John Nash

Not related to the Puckett family, but associated with William Puckett (D11) and Douglass Puckett (D12).

John Nash was the father of both Abner Nash, second Governor of the State of North Carolina, and for whom Nash Co, NC is named; as well as Francis Nash, a Revolutionary War General for whom Nashville, TN is named.

John Nash was a Sheriff of Henrico Co, VA, and took the tax of Dale Parish in 1736; this tax list featured most of the Puckett families in America at that time.

John Nash moved to Amelia Co, VA, the area which would become Prince Edward Co in 1754.  In the tax lists of Amelia Co, VA from the 1740s and 1750s, Douglass and William Puckett were at various times listed as tithes under John Nash.  They likely worked as overseers for Nash's many slaves.

The will of John Nash, dated 8 Mar 1776 (Prince Edward Co, VA WB 1:194), mentions the land of Douglass Puckett.  It is unclear how John Nash came to own it.

After the death of his first wife, John Nash married Elizabeth Fisher:  Sussex Co, VA, 24 Sep 1757, Col John Nash Sr of Prince Edward to Elizabeth daughter of Charles Fisher, deceasedElizabeth's mother, Mary Fisher, moved to Prince Edward Co, and made her will there 28 Mar 1765 (Prince Edward Co, VA WB 1:201) naming children Elizabeth Nash and others, and naming John Nash Jr as Executor.  The will was witnessed by Samuel Pow (P his mark), Jamariah [sic, Jeremiah] Puckett (P his mark) and William Puckett Jr.  The will was proved in Prince Edward Court on 16 Mar 1778 by Jamariah [sic, Jeremiah] Pucket, William Pucket and William Pucket Jr.  Curiously, William Puckett (Sr) was not listed as a witness, but helped prove the will.

John Nash Jr sold land to William Puckett in Lunenburg Co, VA  (DB 10:140, 008151713:84) - 24 Oct 1764, John Nash Jr of St Patrick Parish, Prince Edward Co, VA to William Puckett of same, 300 acres in Lunenburg Co part of a patent to William Pledger bounded by Joseph Minor, Barnes.   Witnesses: John Whitworth, Wm Harrison, Anthony Puckett, Paul Carrington, Clem Read.  Proved by witnesses at Lunenburg Court 11 Apr 1765.

Several early John Puckett individuals

Sorting the early records for John Puckett is difficult.

John Puckett of Third Branch

I call him John Puckett of Third Branch to distinguish from other John Pucketts, and because he had land on Third Branch of Swift Creek in Henrico, later Chesterfield Co, VA.

Virginia Patent Book 17:27 (008570206:52) - John Pucket, 300 acres in Henrico Co, south side of Swift Creek, south side of Third Branch.  15 Mar 1735.

Chesterfield Co, VA WB 2:163 (007644373:759).  Will of John Puckett, dated 22 Jan 1772, of Dale Parish in Chesterfield Co, VA.  Grandson John Puckett the lower part of my land joining land of Thomas Worsham, divided beginning at path on Third Branch, John Hatchet, John Belcher, the Ridge Path, Richd Purdue.  Slave boy Hampton.  But if grandson John Puckett dies before age 21 or marriage, said land and slave to be divided between my two grandchildren Sarah & Mary Puckett.  Grandson John Reams 150 acres joining the land I gave to my grandson John Puckett.  Daughter Mary Flowers one shilling.  Daughter Frans [Frances] Reams one shilling.  Granddaughter Sarah Puckett cows.  Granddaughter Mary Puckett cows.  My estate not to be appraised.  Daughter Amey Puckett to have use of my estate not yet given away during her widowhood, but if she marries or dies, the said estate should be divided between my three grandchildren Sarah Puckett, Mary Puckett & John Puckett.  Friend Thomas Belcher Jr Executor.   Signed John Puckett (I his mark).  Witnesses Thos Worsham, Richd Perdue (R his mark), Josiah Perdue (J his mark).

Chesterfield Co, VA OB 5:228 (007897743:132) - 5 Feb 1773 - The Last Will and Testament of John Puckett decd was proved by the oaths of Thomas Worsham, Richard Purdue and Josiah Purdue...

Daughter Amey in John's will was likely daughter-in-law, widow of John's deceased son; it was common to call a daughter-in-law 'daughter'.  From tax lists of Chesterfield, Lewis Puckett was near the Perdue neighbors and witnesses in John Puckett's will.  In the 1761 tax list (007856400:123), Lewis Puckett was a levy between the listing of John Belcher (with William Belcher, Thomas Belcher and slaves Dick and Moll) and the listing of Richard Perdue (with Josiah Perdue).

John Puckett himself was likely tax exempt due to age or disability.  Likely the same John Puckett as this record:  Henrico Co, VA OB 1737-1746:175, 5 Apr 1742, On the petition of John Pucket he is Exempted from paying any more County Levyes.

Lewis Puckett son of John Puckett of Third Branch should not be confused with Lewis Puckett, D13 in Gee's book - that Lewis was on tax lists of Amelia Co, VA through 1753 when that area of Amelia became Prince Edward Co in 1754, and he likely died in Prince Edward Co soon after.  Chesterfield Co, VA Chancery Case 1764-002, William Walthall vs Thomas Pucket (see below) details that this Lewis Puckett died without children before 1764.

Lewis Puckett and Amey LNU had children Sarah, Mary and John Puckett.  John son of Lewis was also referred to as Lewis in court records, perhaps a mistake for his father, or perhaps his name was John Lewis Puckett.  Edwarrd Reams, probably husband of Frances Puckett Reams, was made guardian of John Puckett:

John Reams, grandson of John Puckett of Third Branch, sold his inheritance: Chesterfield Co, VA DB 7:319. 15 Oct 1773 - John Reams of Manchester Parish, Chest Co, to Thomas Worsham, 150 acres willed to said John Reams by his grandfather John Puckett, part of 300 acres formerly in possession of said John Puckett.  Signed John his + mark Reames.  Wit:  Thomas Belcher, Thomas Baugh, Frederick + Blankenship.  Court 5 Nov 1773 ack by John Reams.

John Puckett, son of Lewis Puckett and grandson of John Puckett of Third Branch, made his will in 1806 (Chesterfield Co, VA WB 6:386, 007644376:491) in which he mentions his slave Hampton - the same slave given to him by his grandfather's will.  John Puckett's 1806 will names his wife Dolley, and children Francis, Simon, William and Lewis Puckett.

Will of John Puckett:  Henrico Co, VA Miscellaneous Records, part 2, page 429 (LDS Film # 007898202, image 251/601).  Note this will was one of few hundred "loose papers" (not in bound volumes) of early Henrico, Co VA to survive.

Abstract: John Puckett Sr of Bristol Parish, Henrico Co, VA made his will 12 May 1716.  Gave his land to be divided equally between his 4 sons John, Joseph, Timothy and Abraham after the death of his wife Elizabeth.  Gave dishes and plates to daughters Martha the wife of Richard Puckett, Elizabeth Puckett, Anne, Sarah & Judith.  Gave a mattress and bed frame to the unborn child his wife was pregnant with.  Everything else to wife Elizabeth, and she sole Executor.  Witnesses: John Granger, Richard Womack.  Proved in Henrico Court on 1 June 1719.

Timothy Puckett  (C2)

Born between late 1692 and 1702.   Name was likely Timothy Allen Puckett, though that full name never appears in records.

He was 21 or older by Sep 1723 when he sued John Clark in court (Henrico Co, VA OB 1719-1724:284, 007898203 :158).  Thomas Bottom was security for defendant in Nov 1724 (OB 1719-1724:372).  The case did not come to trial before the end of this Order Book in Dec 1724, and the subsequent Order Book is missing.  This was the last known record for Timothy in Virginia.

Timothy was a witness for brother Joseph Puckett in Oct 1720 (a trial witness could be any age).  A witness for mother Elizabeth (Allen) Puckett in Oct 1724.

Likely the same as the Timothy Puckett in South Carolina by 1736.  See 5-part series of articles in Long Hunter:

Timothy Puckett (C2) has been conflated with a Timothy Allen Puckett who died in Chesterfield Co, VA in 1776; however this Timothy Allen Puckett died with 7 minor children, which seems unlikely for a man born before 1703.  Timothy Allen Puckett was likely the son of Joseph Puckett (C4), and thus the nephew of Timothy Puckett (C2).

Joseph Puckett  (C4)

born between late 1692 and 1699.  Died before June 1750.

He was 21 or older by April 1720 when sued Henry Walthall in court (Henrico Co, VA OB 1719-1724:22, 007898203 :20).  When the case went to trial in Oct 1720, Womack Puckett and Timothy Puckett were witnesses for Joseph, while John Baugh was a witness for Henry Baugh (OB 1719-1724:52-53).

Married Judith Lester.  Joseph was mentioned in the will of Henry Lester (Henrico Co, VA WD 1725-1737:569) dated 22 Jan 1722 as "son-in-law Joseph Pucket" and "his wife Judith".  Chesterfield Co, VA formed 25 May 1749 from Henrico Co.   Chesterfield Co, VA OB 1:54 - 1 June 1750, Judith Pucket granted administration of estate of Joseph Pucket.

There is no direct evidence of his children, but strong circumstantial evidence for sons Joseph Puckett and Timothy Allen Puckett.   Brazure Puckett may also have been his son.

In the Vestry Book of St Patrick Parish, Prince Edward Co, VA, 14 Aug 1759, in sequential listings, Henry Lister was paid for keeping Mary Puckett "11 months to this time" and John Young was paid for keeping Judith Puckett "the Same time".  Henry Lister was likely Henry Lester, a relative of Judith Lester Puckett.  This may refer to Judith Puckett, widow of Joseph.

The Shippy Puckett on the 1776 partial tax list of Chesterfield Co, VA was likely a grandson of Joseph Puckett (C4), due to the name Shippy running in the family of John Puckett (B1) and Elizabeth Allen.  He fought in the Revolutionary War in the same unit as Womack Puckett (possibly D20 in Gee's book, but more likely a younger Womack Puckett).  He died in service, and his mother Mary was paid in corn:  Chesterfield Co, VA OB 6:234 (007897743:409) Apr 1780 - Mary Puckett whose son Shippy Puckett enlisted & died in the Continental Service allotted 2 barrels of corn.

Joseph Puckett son of Joseph Puckett (C4)

Evidently the eldest son of Joseph Puckett (C4), because he sold the land his father had been left by his father, John Puckett (B1), whose will split his land between his 4 sons.  Joseph Jr inherited this land via the primogeniture law of the time, meaning eldest son inherited all the land, unless the father made a will stating otherwise.  Joseph Puckett Sr had died prior to June 1750.

DB 1:262 (008578885:276) - 13 Mar 1751, Joseph Pucket to William Walthall, 25 acres on Ashand [sic, Ashen] Swamp, part of land belonging to John Puckett deceased, mouth of Ruty Run, dividing line between Joseph Pucket & John Pucket, John Pucket Turners line.  Wit:  John Pucket Junr, Benjamin Walthall, Edward Bass.  Court 6 Sep 1751, acknowledged by Joseph Puckett.

A Joseph Puckett, probably Joseph Puckett Jr, was on tax lists of Amelia Co, VA in 1740, 1744, 1746, 1747 (See book Amelia County, Virginia tax lists: an every-name index at FamilySearch books, free online).  He was in the same tax district of Amelia Co, VA as Henry Lester, possibly an uncle or a cousin from his mother's (Judith Lester) family.

Joseph Puckett was on the 1749 Lunenburg Co, Tax list.  He was listed on the 1752 tax list of Chesterfield Co, VA as Joseph Puckett Jr, right after Brazure Puckett.

Timothy Allen Puckett son of Joseph Puckett (C4)

Probable son of Joseph Puckett (C4).  Possibly his grandson, the son of Joseph Puckett Jr.

Conflated with his uncle, Timothy Puckett (C2).

The name of is his wife was unknown.  He named his eldest son Joseph, likely after his father.  Also, the name "Timothy Allen" occurred in the descendants of John Puckett (B1) and his wife Elizabeth Allen, whose father was likely Timothy Allen.

In 1760, Timothy Allen Puckett witnessed the will of Samuel Hancock, dated 1 Sep 1760 (Chesterfield Co, WB 1:377, 007644373:411).  Timothy Allen Puckett was at least 14 to witness the will, but probably older.  He signed with a mark that looks somewhat like capital H.

Bought land in 1772:  Chesterfield Co, VA DB 7:20 (008578891:22) - 5 Mar 1772, James Smith to Timothy Allen Puckett, 45 acres bounded by Thomas Franklyn, Henry Smith, James Gil, Joseph Atkins & James Smith.  No witnesses.  Court 6 Mar 1772, acknowledged by James Smith.

He died in 1776.  Chesterfield Co, VA OB 6:100 (007897743:318) - Mar 1776 - Ordered that the Sheriff take administration of the estate of Timothy Allen Puckett deceased.  Ordered that the Church Wardens do bind out Ann, Sarah, Joseph, Patsy, William, Dianna & Timothy Allen Puckett orphans of T Allen Puckett according to law.

The children of Timothy Allen Puckett were probably listed in birth order, and Joseph as eldest son inherited the land of his father, which he sold in 1790.

Chesterfield Co, VA DB 11:648 (008578894:330) - 2 Mar 1790, Joseph Puckett of Dale Parish, Chesterfield Co, to William Smith of same, 45 acres, bounded by Henry Smith, James Gill, Joseph Akins and Peter Franklyn.  Wit: James Dillon, John Smith, William Dillon (+ his mark), John Cogbill.  Court 8 Apr 1790, acknowledged by Joseph Puckett.

William Puckett (C14)

From the will of Dinah Walthall (Henrico Co, VA WD 1714-1718:73), dated 1 Oct 1715, it appears her sister Mabel was undecided whether to marry William Puckett:  To sister Mavel, 1 shilling if she marry William Puckett, otherwise to divide my new goods with her sister.  On 9 Jan 1713/14 (1714 New Style), Richard Walthall made his will (Henrico Co, VA WD 1714-1718:27) naming several children, among them Mabell and Dyanah.

William Puckett married Mabel Walthall after 1 Oct 1715, and he died by 31 July 1719 when his estate was appraised:  William Pucket Inventory (Henrico Co, VA Misc Court records 1718-1726:463-4, 007898202:269), Appraised 31 July 1719, by James Baugh, unreadable signature (possibly Henry Sherman), Thomas Baugh. Presented in Henrico court 3 Aug 1719 by Mabell Puckett

Mabel remarried to Womack Puckett, which we know from Orphan Court records:  Henrico Co, VA Orphans Court:55 (007676115:250), 5 Oct 1725, Summoned Womack Pucket who married with Mabel relict of William Pucket decd.

I disagree with Gee that Womack Puckett was the son of William Puckett (B2).  I think Womack was the son of Thomas Puckett (B3) and Mary Womack.  Thus Mabel married second the brother of her first husband.

Mabel Walthall apparently had children by first husband William Puckett, otherwise Womack Puckett would not have been summoned by the Orphans Court in 1725.  There are no more mentions of William or Womack Puckett in the remaining Orphans Court records.  In the 1736 Henrico Co, VA tax list, Womack Puckett paid two levies for males over 16, himself and either his son or his brother's son.  The 1752 partial tax list of Chesterfield Co, VA shows the names of all levies (tithes); Womack Puckett's household includes himself, Bows Puckett [sic, Boaz Puckett], and Womack Puckett Jr.  In a row after Womack Puckett are Ephraim Puckett, Isham Puckett and Page Puckett.  From Bristol Parish birth records, we know Ephraim and Isham were sons of Womack and Mabel Puckett, and Womack Jr appears to be a son as well.  Since Boaz was still living with Womack Puckett Sr, he was likely Womack's son.  That leaves Page Puckett as possible a son of William and Mable Puckett.  Alternatively, Page Puckett in this tax list was the same Page Puckett, son of John Puckett the Turner in his will.

Thomas Puckett (D10)

Born sometime circa 1705 - 1710.  Died circa Apr 1798.

Wife or wives names unknown.   His final son, William Puckett, was likely born out of wedlock with a Perdue woman.

In the 1752 Chesterfield Co, VA tax list, he was listed as a household head with Mark Puckett and Abraham Puckett tithes living with him.  A tithe was a free male 16 or older, or a slave of either gender 12 or older.  From tax lists and deeds, it appears Mark and Abraham were sons of Thomas.  Note that this Abraham Puckett was D17 in Gee's book; she misidentified him as a son of an earlier Abraham Puckett ( C9, also attributed to wrong parents).

In the 1756 Chesterfield list, Thomas is again a head with Edward a tithe in his listing.  Abraham Puckett is a head with Anthony Puckett a tithe in his listing.  Anthony presumed to be Abraham's brother and Thomas's son.

In the 1757 Chesterfield Co, VA tax list, Thomas has Ned Puckett in his listing; Ned was a common nickname for Edward.

In the 1762 Chesterfield Co, VA tax list, Thomas has Thomas Puckett Jr in his listing.  Edward Puckett is in the listing of the Estate of John Clay.

Later sons from other records appear to be Jesse and James Puckett.

In early deeds of Henrico & Chesterfield Cos, VA, he signed his name with his mark of TP.  Later, he signed with an X, likely due to failing health or eyesight.

His will as abstracted by Gee:  Thomas Puckett of Chesterfield leaves to William Puckett, otherwise called William Perdue, all his personal estate. Feb. 5, 1787 [Gee had this incorrect as 1783]. Witnesses, Geo. Markham, Burwell Cashion, Tod Cashion. No proving date.  [Chesterfield Co, VA Will Book] Book 5, p. 145.

His will was proved in Chesterfield Court in Apr 1798:  The last Will and Testament of Thomas Puckett decd was proved by the oaths of Markham & Cashion witnesses thereto and order recorded.    OB 12:450, 007895971:562.

Thomas Puckett Sr was likely 88 to 93 when he died, 15 years after he made his will.

Thomas Puckett Sr has been confused with his son, Thomas Puckett Jr,  who died in 1784.  The will of Thomas Puckett (Jr) as abstracted by Gee:  Thomas Puckett, Parish of Manchester. To my wife Prudence Puckett, all my estate as long as she lives or to her remarriage.  Then to son John King Cashoon Puckett. Feb. 6, 1781. Witnesses Matt Cheatham, Lester Thomas Moody.   [Chesterfield Co, VA Will Book] Bk. 3, p. 443.

Note that Thomas Jr did not name an executor.  His will was proved in Chesterfield Court in Aug 1784:  The last will and Testament of Thomas Puckett was proved by the oaths of Matthew Cheatham and Jeremiah Lester and was ordered to be recorded.  OB 7:7, 007897744:19.  Three months later, in Nov 1784 court, Jesse Puckett, presumed brother of Thomas Jr, was granted administration:  On the motion of Jesse Puckett administration on the estate of Thomas Puckett Jr is granted him...  OB 7:75, 007897744:54.  Thomas Puckett Jr must have died while traveling in Henry Co, VA.  An account of Thomas Puckett deceased with Jesse Puckett administrator mentions money paid to William Cole “for going to Henry County to bring in the estate”.  Chesterfield Co, VA WB 4:225, 007644375:233.  The account is dated 25 Apr 1789, and soon afterwards, Jesse Puckett moved to Edgefield Co, SC, where he was for the 1790 Federal Census.  In Henry Co, VA, Eliphaz Shelton was appointed administrator of Thomas Puckett's estate there in July 1784 (Henry Co, VA OB 3:166, 007898572:203), and an account of Thomas Puckett's estate was recorded in Henry Co, VA Will Book 1:92, dated 28 Oct 1784.

Thomas Puckett (Sr) was excused from paying the county levy (tithe) in Aug 1770 (Chesterfield Co, VA OB 4:440, 007894508:624), and again in Feb 1784 (OB 6:508, 007897743:521):  Thomas Puckett Senior being aged and infirm is discharged from payment of taxes & levies for his person.

After making his will, Thomas Puckett Sr gave land to James Puckett:  Chesterfield Co, VA DB 15:137 (008578898:80) - 11 Apr 1787 - Thomas Puckett Sr to James Puckett, "for the love and good will I have & do bear unto James Puckett" and 5 shillings, 50 acres adjoining land whereon said Thos Puckett now lives.  Thomas his X mark Puckett.  Wit:  Burrell Cashon, Thos Cashon, Joel Cashon.  Dec 1800 proved by Joel & Thos Cashon.

The deed does not specify the relationship between Thomas Puckett Sr and James Puckett, but I assume James was Thomas's son.  James could have been a grandson of Thomas.

To recap, the known and presumed children of Thomas Puckett Sr:

Chesterfield Co, VA Chancery Case 1764-002, William Walthall vs Thomas Pucket

This chancery case abstracted in the Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol 33, Number 3:  William Pucket died testate June 1739 Henrico Co.  The witnesses Philip Turpin and John Green are deceased.  He appointed his eldest son Thomas Pucket his executor.  He died before executing a deed to William Kennon for land sold to him.  Son Lewis got some land from William Kennon who died before making sale.  Lewis Pucket conveyed 17 Feb 1753 to Richard Kennon, gent since deceased, son and heir to William Kennon.  Lewis Pucket died intestate without issue.  Thomas Pucket was his eldest brother and heir at law.  Mary Pucket with mother as security was to have administration on estate of William Pucket as Thomas Pucket refused.  No will or bond was found.

Note descepancies between the 2 deeds.  The 1764 deed mistakenly says 180 rather than 108 acres, and says the land was conveyed by Lewis 17 Feb 1750, rather than 17 Feb 1753.  Richard Kennon had sold 150 acres to William Walthall on 21 Aug 1757 (Chesterfield Co, VA DB 3:256) which probably included the 108 acres sold by Lewis Puckett to Kennon.  William Walthall apparently thought the title of the land was not clear, and had Thomas Puckett re-convey the land for 5 shillings, a nominal amount.

Thomas Puckett, William Puckett and Douglass Puckett received a patent from Virginia Colony on 5 June 1746 for 486 acres in Henrico Co, VA on Third Branch of Swift Creek (VA Patent Book 25:97, 008570212:114).  Since Thomas was eldest, the order of the names on this patent was likely oldest to youngest.  On 15 July 1732, Douglass Puckett witnessed a deed from William Pride to Daniel Nunnally (Henrico Co, VA WD 1725-1737:354, 007645095:368).  Douglas Puckett had to be at least 14 to witness a deed or will, but was likely a little older.  We can estimate Thomas was born circa 1710, William born circa 1712, and Douglass born circa 1715.

Lewis Puckett, son of William and Mary Puckett, was born  9 Jan 1723 (New Style year) from the Bristol Parish Register.  Elizabeth Puckett, daughter of William and Mary, was born 19 Feb 1725 (unclear if New or Old Style) from the Bristol Parish Register.

By the time the patent was granted to Thomas, William and Douglass Puckett in 1746, William and Douglass, along with younger brother Lewis, had moved to Amelia Co, VA.  William sold his third of the patent to Joshua Farguson (see William Puckett D11), and Douglas Puckett sold his third to brother Thomas Puckett (see Douglass Puckettt D12) in 1749.  Thomas Puckett now had two-third of the 486 acre patent, or 324 acres.  Thomas Puckett sold 100 acres of the 324 to probable son Mark Puckett on 2 Dec 1754 (Chesterfield Co, VA DB 2:185), and the remaining 224 acres to probable son Abraham Puckett on 2 Nov 1762 (Chesterfield Co, VA DB 5:175).  Thomas Puckett bought 100 acres from Abraham Puckett the same day, 2 Nov 1762 (Chesterfield Co, VA DB 5:173).  Thomas Puckett gifted 50 acres to likely son James Puckett in 1787 (Chesterfield Co, VA DB 15:137).  The 1791 Land Tax of Chesterfield Co, VA lists James Puckett and William Puckett with 50 acres each in a row.  Thomas Puckett Sr was not dead yet, but very old, thus youngest son William Purdue/Puckett paid the tax.

See Some descendants of three early Henrico (Chesterfield) County, Virginia, settlers, by Jerome Travers, available for free online at FamilySearch books.  The Puckett family research begin an p.14, with a few errors, but generally very solid.  Travers confuses and conflates Thomas Puckett Sr for his son Thomas Puckett Jr.  Travers also incorrectly lists Ned Puckett as another child of Thomas Puckett Sr, when Ned was simply a nickname for Edward.  Travers says Jesse Puckett was administrator of Thomas Puckett Jr estate in 1781, which is incorrect; it was 1784.  The Hill section of the book covers the children John Hill had out of wedlock with Ann Puckett before he married her; all these children appear to have eventually taken their father's Hill surname.

Mark Puckett had several deeds selling land to his 4 sons in Chesterfield Co, VA.
