Thomas Womack

Of Chesterfield Co, VA.

Branch B.13-A. Also, Branch E.5.

Son of Thomas Womack.

Born circa 1738. Thomas Womack Sr and Thomas Womack Jr witnessed the Chesterfield will of John Read/Rudd 5 Jan 1754 (WB 1:152); this is the first record of Thomas Jr. Thomas Jr had to have been at least 14 to witness a will. Thomas Womack Jr was a household head in the 1762 Chesterfield tithe list; with probable brother Peter Womack and slave Robert as other tithes in his listing.

Thomas Womack Jr lived in western Chesterfield Co, VA on or near the land his grandfather Richard Womack had purchased from William Grills in 1712; this land was on the Appomattox River where Sappony Creek joined it, and across the river from Amelia County.

Married Sarah Swinney, born circa 1742, daughter of Edmund Swinney by 28 Aug 1760. She chose John Southerland as her guardian (Amelia Co, VA OB 4:92) in 1756, meaning she was at least 14, the age at which an orphan could choose her guardian; the guardianship record says she was the orphan of Edmund Swinney with Abraham Swinney security. Sarah's son, Archibald "Archer" Womack would later have Joel Swinney, son of Abraham Swinney and Elizabeth "Betty" LNU as his guardian (Lunenburg Co, VA DB 19:112). On 28 Aug 1760, Thomas Womack and wife Sarah discharged John Southerland of his guardianship of Sarah (Amelia Co, VA OB 6:38). This means Sarah was not yet 21, because at 21, the guardianship would have automatically ended. The Swinney family was likely descended from Edmund Sweeney of Elizabeth City Co, VA - link.

Lunenburg Co, VA DB 19:112 - 16 Mar 1802 - Joel Swinney (apptd by the Lunenburg Co Ct as guardian to Archibald Womack orphan of Thomas Womack decd late of Chesterfield Co) and Betty Swinney to John Crafton all of Lunenburg Co, bill of sale for slaves Boson, Hannah, Dilcey, Shadrac, Spencer. [NOTE: On the 1782 Personal Property Tax List of Amelia Co, VA, Elizabeth Swinney is on the same page as Archibald's uncle Josiah Womack: Elizabeth Swinney with slaves Bosin, Jack, Hannah. Josiah Womack had been involved in the probate of Abraham Swinney, Elizabeth's husband. So, of the 5 slaves sold, at least Boson and Hannah belonged to Elizabeth Swinney. Slave Spencer may have belonged to Archibald, inherited from his brother Jesse who had a slave named Spencer in his 1797 inventory. NOTE 2: By coincidence, the next deed in DB 19 is for land sold by Jeremiah Broughton & wife Ann of Lunenburg; Ann was Ann Womack Broughton, Archibald's first cousin.]

The Lunenburg deed proves Archibald was still a minor on 16 Mar 1802, so under 21, thus born after 16 Mar 1781. His father Thomas made his will on 13 Nov 1782 naming son Archer, who must have been a baby when his father died, born between 16 Mar 1781 and 13 Nov 1782. Archibald's sister, Susanna Womack Spears, was listed as 70 in the 1850 Fed Census of Chesterfield Co, VA, and as 81 in the 1860 Fed Census of Chesterfield Co, VA, so she was born circa 1779.

THE NORTH CAROLINA BOOKLET, Vol IX, 1909, published by the North Carolina Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Womack: Millie (Womack) Nixon, the mother of Alfred Nixon, was the daughter of Archibald Womack and Sallie (Huger) Womack, who emigrated from near Richmond, Va., and from where he inherited valuable property.

Huger: Sallie (Huger) Womack, the grandmother of Alfred Nixon was the daughter of John Huger and Sallie (Stacey) Huger. The Hugers came to Lincoln County prior to and during the American Revolution; are of Huguenot descent, a noble sect of whom Mr. Winthrop said "has furnished to our land blood every way worthy of being mingled with the best that ever flowed in the veins of either Southern Cavaliers or Northern Puritans."

Hager Biographies

John Hager was married twice. His will bears date 9th July, 1840. In this he mentions eighteen children, and I have heard it said there were four others who had died prior to that time.

(a) His first child was born Dec. 20, 1790. She was named Sallie after

her mother. When about fifteen she married Archibald Womack of Virginia and was the mother of fourteen children.

Four of them are living at this date:

Starling and Elisha Womack, Vina Nixon, the widow of John Nixon. Esq., and Millie Nixon, the widow of Robert Nixon. The latter is the mother of the writer. Among other

children of Sallie Womack may be mentioned:

Susan Regan, wife of P. G.Regan, Jane, wife of Franklin Hager, Elizabeth, wife of Alfred Childers, William died in Civil War, Thomas of Batesville, Arkansas.

Mrs. Sallie Womack died 17th June, 1874, aged 83 years, 4 months and 17 days. She is buried at Unity, with her son Jesse who was killed by the kick of a horse at Rock Spring Camp Ground, August 11th, 1862.
