Wolfpack, Patriots split rifle match

FAIRBANKS—The West Valley Wolfpack and North Pole Patriots split a high school rifle match shot earlier this month at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Range.
The Patriots won the smallbore portion of the meet 1,974-1,952 and the Wolfpack captured the air rifle portion of the meet 2,136-2,065.
Brenna Welch (534) and Jana Armstrong (518) had personal best performances to lift the Patriots to victory in the smallbore match. Erika Blanchard notched a 479 and Zachary Andrews registered a 443 to complete North Pole’s scoring.
Nicole Plummer and Matt East both shot 513 to set the pace for West Valley. Phillip Wilson posted a 491 and Casey MacCheyne put up a 435.
West Valley won the junior varsity match 1,786-1,519. The only personal best score was put up by North Pole’s Mitch Durant with a 421.
Plummer posted a 562 in lead the Wolfpack to victory in the air rifle event. Wilson notched a 532, East posted a 527 and Garrett Sheets registered a personal best 515.
Welch and Blanchard both had scores of 530 for the Patriots. Armstrong and Andrews rounded out the team with personal best scores of 509 and 496, respectively.
West Valley won the junior varsity match by forfeit when one of the North Pole shooters was ill so the Patriots could not field a full team.
Personal best scores were shot by West Valley’s MacCheyne (516) and Jesse Barrett (469) and North Pole’s Caleb Simmons 466 and Shane Stapp (303.
