FAIRBANKS—JT Schnering and Amy Gentry each swept their respective air rifle and smallbore events at the Alaska State Qualifying Junior Olympic Rifle Championships on Friday-Sunday at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.
Schnering, an Alaska Nanooks freshman and former Lathrop shooter, claimed the men’s air rifle title after firing a 588 and won smallbore with a 574.
It’s the second straight year that Schnering has won the state title in both.
Gentry, a senior at Hutchison High School, won the women’s air rifle with a 395 and fired a 580 to win smallbore.
Schnering and Gentry each earned automatic invitations to the USA Shooting Junior Olympic Rifle Championships, which are scheduled for April 3-26 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Hutchison’s Mason Falkner took second in men’s air rifle with a 573 while Delta Junction’s Miles Patton finished third after shooting a 565.
Lathrop’s Liam Eberhart was runner-up in men’s smallbore after firing a 564 while Falkner took third with a 559.
Alaska Nanooks sophomore Luke Johnson fired the highest score in smallbore and second highest in air rifle but didn’t count in the standings as he hails from Marysville, Pennsylvania. His scores of 585 in air rifle and a 579 in smallbore were good enough to earn him automatic invitations to the Junior Olympics from Pennsylvania.
Lathrop’s Malinda Malenfant finished runner-up in the women’s air rifle competition after shooting a 388. West Valley’s Brinley Jarvis took third, also shooting a 388.
Delaney Reece, another Wolfpack shooter, took second in women’s smallbore with a 564. Lathrop’s Kelcy McGrath finished third, one point behind Reece.
