The No. 1-ranked Alaska Nanooks rifle team emerged with a one-point victory Thursday morning in its first road trip of the season.

The Nanooks earned a total victory of 4,674-4,673 against Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Ala. The Gamecocks are ranked seventh in the latest College Rifle Coaches Association Poll.

The Nanooks compiled a 2,320 total in smallbore, one point higher than the Gamecocks, and each team registered a 2,354 total in air rifle.

“Everybody struggled today at the beginning of their matches and got better as it went on,” Nanooks head coach Dan Jordan said in an audio interview on the Nanooks website.

“So that was a really good positive point that they were able to come back and finish strong after struggling a little bit at the beginning,’’ he added. “To shoot those big scores, you have to have it at the beginning.”

The Nanooks had the top shooters in each discipline. Junior Ryan Anderson won the smallbore with a 586 and sophomore Tim Sherry had the meet’s best air rifle score of 594.

The Nanooks compete at 5 a.m. AST Saturday against 10th-ranked Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.
