Nanooks rifle duo qualify for national team

FAIRBANKS — Alaska Nanooks rifle sophomores Tim Sherry and Lorelie Stanfield have qualified for the United States National Development Team after their performances at the 2014 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships.

Sherry, who won the smallbore title at the 2014 NCAA Championships, earned podium spots in the 10-meter air rifle and 50-meter three position, 120-shot matches at the Olympic Training on April 15-26 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Stanfield earned a spot on the podium in the 50-meter, three-position, 60-shot match.

The two are set to compete in the final round of tryouts for the World Junior Championships. The final round is set to take place June 22-29 at the USA Shooting National Championships in Fort Benning, Georgia.

“This year at Junior Olympics, both Lorelie and Tim established themselves as some of the dominant juniors in the country,” head coach Dan Jordan said in a University of Alaska Fairbanks press release. “Not only did they position themselves well to make the World Championships Junior Team, but they also gained valuable big match experience and good finals opportunities.”

Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year, won gold in the air rifle match at the National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships, beating West Virginia’s Garrett Spurgeon by 10 points.

The Highlands Ranch, Colorado, native finished fifth in the qualification round but won the the three-position final match match by four points, giving him silver by one point over Air Force’s David Higgins and North Carolina State’s Lucas Kozeniesky.

Stanfield took silver in the women’s three-position by finishing second in the finals. She had finished sixth in the qualifying match. Nebraska’s Lauren Phillips won gold in the three position match.

The Fairbanks native finished sixth overall in the air rifle match.

Nanooks sophomore Jamie Barnes also competed at the Junior Olympics. She finished 48th in air rifle and 49th the three-position match.
