FAIRBANKS — For Ryan Anderson and the Alaska Nanooks rifle team, Sunday was a day to remember at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range. Anderson tied his personal best with a 596 on air rifle and helped the Nanooks set a record team score of 4,694 as they beat Mississippi.

“Some really, really strong air gun,” head coach Dan Jordan said. “We had some really good depth in smallbore too. All together, really good day. And we gave up some points because I didn’t pick the teams right. Good start to the season.”

The Nanooks beat the Rebels 4,694-4,610.

Anderson’s 596 on air rifle was tops of all shooters and he also led all shooters with a 591 in smallbore.

“This year he’s come in really more consistent,” Jordan said of Anderson. “Last couple of years he’s had some big scores. But now he’s finding a way to do it everyday.”

Tim Sherry finished right behind Anderson in air rifle, shooting 595.

“Tim’s come on really, really strong this year,” Jordan said. “Last year he was a little inconsistent but had some big scores. This year he’s really picked it up even more and really become more consistent and one of the top scorers on the team.”

Dan Geer shot a 584 in smallbore, second for the Nanooks behind Anderson.

Melissa Quartarone led the Rebels, shooting a 586 in both air rifle and smallbore. Abigail Stanec shot a 584 in air rifle for the Rebels and added a 570 in smallbore, both second for the Rebels behind Quartarone.

Even with the wins over the Rebels (ranked No. 14 in the country) and North Carolina State (ranked No. 16), the Nanooks have bigger things in mind.

“Winning against an individual team is a good feeling,” Anderson said. “Really it’s just getting practice for those bigger matches.”

The Nanooks are expected to be ranked No. 1 when the latest polls come out.
