Locals win at Junior Olympics rifle meet

FAIRBANKS — Alaska Nanooks Lorelie Stanfield and Ryan Anderson completed a sweep of the Alaska Junior Olympic State Rifle Championships on Sunday by winning their respective smallbore competitions at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center. Both shooters won air rifle crowns on Saturday.

Stanfield, a freshman from Lathrop, won the women’s smallbore crown Saturday by posting a score of 567 out of 600. Jaime Barnes, another Nanooks freshman from Lathrop, took second with a 557. Jaime’s younger sister, Kacey, a junior at Lathrop, notched a 547 for third place.

Competitors shooting personal best scores included Hutchison’s Emma Daniels (527) and Amy Gentry (499) and Ashlyn Mahoney of Valdez with a 445.

Anderson, a sophomore, won the men’s title with a 579. Hutchison’s Gabe Stutz posted a personal best score of 554 to take the runner-up spot. Joshua Smith of Lathrop earned the bronze medal with a personal best performance of 547.

Stutz received the Dunham Award as the top high school smallbore shooter at the state championships.

Other personal best efforts were put up by Lathrop’s Connor Gilman (534), Hutchison’s Max Delzer (521), Lathrop’s Erik Kirshner (515) and Mitchel Yrjana (495) of Valdez.
