Shooters turn in strong performances

A number of personal best scores were turned in Saturday when the North Pole Patriots and Delta Junction Huskies split a high school rifle match at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Range.

North Pole won the smallbore portion of the meet 1,867-1,781, while Delta Junction won the air rifle event 2,063-2,025.

Brenna Welch and Mitch Durrant turned in personal best scores of 514 and 411, respectively, to help the Patriots win the smallbore event. Jana Armstrong posted a 471 and Erika Blanchard registered a 461 to round out North Pole’s scoring.

Alex Mathews 484 led Delta Junction, followed by Jakob Shautt with a 469, Joe Cepeda with a 446 and Angus Pospisil with a 382.

Rachael Hannon’s personal best of 539 propelled Delta Junction to its win in the air rifle competition. Shautt registered a 527, Mathews posted a 503 and Newman had a personal best 494 for the Huskies.

North Pole’s’ top three shooters all had personal best performances, with Welch posting a 544, Blanchard recording a 543 and Durrant collecting a 475. Armstrong rounded out the team with a 463.
