Alaska shooters have strong outings at Junior Nationals

FAIRBANKS — The members of the Alaska Nanooks rifle team placed in the top eight and two Lathrop High School shooters made strong showings in the men’s air rifle competition at the 2013 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships in Colorado Springs.

Nanooks sophomores Ryan Anderson and Tim Sherry, placed second and seventh, respectively after two days of shooting and a 10 shot final at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Lathrop’s JT Schnering finished 74th and Connor Gilman was 98th out of 102 Junior 1, Junior 2 and Junior 3 shooters in the competition. Both are Junior 2 shooters competing at a national level for the first time.

Anderson finished two points behind Connor Davis in the match 1,183 to 1,181. Anderson made up some ground in the final with a 102.6, but it wasn’t enough to claim the title.

Davis finished with a 1,285.1, and Anderson checked in with a 1,283.6. Tyler Rico was third with a 1,279.9. Sherry posted 1,273.6 for seventh place.

Schnering posted scores of 541 on the first day and 564 on the second to finish with a 1,105, while Gilman notched a 525 and a 521 for a 1,046.
