FAIRBANKS — Luke Johnson, who set eight National Rifle Association national records during a four-year period, has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Alaska Nanooks rifle team, according to a University of Alaska Fairbanks press release Tuesday.

Johnson, of Marysville, Pennsylvania, set eight NRA national records in smallbore shooting from 2010-14. He also was recognized for recording the high any-sight total in the intermediate junior three-position event at a 2013 national match in Camp Perry, Ohio.

“Luke is going to fit in well with the team next year,” Nanooks head coach Dan Jordan said in the release. “He has an outgoing personality, strong work ethic and brings some big scores to an already deep team.

“His love of the outdoors and adventure is going to help him enjoy Alaska as well,” Jordan added. “I’m looking forward to seeing him push some of the others on the team and compete for one of the top spots.”

Johnson was a member of the Palmyra Junior Rifle Club. He helped the club to national titles in 2012 and 2013 at the Whistler Boy Smallbore Team Match at the NRA National Smallbore Rifle Prone Championships, while also claiming the title at the 2012 and 2013 National Indoor Metric Position Championships.

Johnson received numerous individual and team accolades while shooting for Palmyra and he holds career-best totals of 583 in the 60-shot smallbore and 1,156 in the 120-shot smallbore. He was the Environthon Country champion in 2013 and qualified for the state match.

Johnson also was a four-year letter winner as an outfielder for the baseball team at Susquenita High School in Duncannon, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the school’s Varsity Club and student council.
